About the Position General Duties & Responsibilities Meet with patients and discuss their dental health habits, problems, and concerns. Use professional tools and equipment to examine and treat patients' teeth, gums, and oral tissue. Diagnose dental illnesses or infections. Prescribe medications for dental problems (painkillers, antibiotics). Develop treatment plans to improve patients' oral health and habits. Instruct patients on proper oral care. Refer patients to specialists if needed. Provide general dentistry professional services to children, adults, and elderly patients at locations assigned by Columbia Dental and in accordance with clinical standards and protocols adopted by Columbia Dental and/or in compliance with Connecticut statutes and Federal regulations. Review medical history at every visit. Examine, assess patient and chart all pathologic conditions and report these to the patient. Hold informed consent discussion with patient, document same in the record, and assure appropriate forms are signed prior to initiating treatment. Document all treatment provided in accordance with Columbia Dental policy and procedures and sign the patient record. Assist in monitoring and directing clinical performance of dental hygienists, department support staff, and students or residents. Supervise taking of x-rays and monitor quality/procedure for x-rays and other equipment operation and procedures by assistants and recommend improvements when needed. Assist with in-service training or orientation and continuing education for dental staff. Practice in accord with OSHA guidelines and standards and comply with HIPAA regulations regarding confidentiality of patient information. Maintain all required certification and licensing. Education & Experience Doctoral degree in Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD). A state license to practice dental medicine. Minimum 5 years of experience. In-depth understanding of oral hygiene and dental procedures. Working experience in diagnosing illnesses and treating them. Ability to communicate with patients about their oral health and problems. Compassion and patience. Attention to detail. Ability to work under pressure. Physical Demands Ability to be physically mobile (stand, walk, reach, climb, bend) and also the ability to stand for prolonged periods throughout the day/work hours when needed. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate medical equipment, keyboard, copier, telephone, and the ability to write/type. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds occasionally.
