Substation Engineer

Job Overview Beta Engineering is currently looking for a Substation Engineer to join their team. Substation Engineers are responsible for the design, interpretation, application and documentation of drawings and calculations pertaining to the physical design of a substation. They ensure designs meet code, standards and client specifications and collaborate with project teams. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Check conduit, grounding, control shelter, electrical arrangements, outdoor lighting and equipment vendor design packages Perform and check grounding calculations Perform and check conduit fill calculations Perform and check pulling tension calculations Perform and check vehicle tracking calculations Perform and check outdoor lighting calculations Perform and check lightning protection design calculations Perform and check substation Sag‑10 calculations Perform and check flexible jumper calculations Perform and check bus design calculations Perform and check arc‑flash calculations Perform and check insulation coordination calculations Perform and check underground ampacity calculations Create and check material list descriptions for all major equipment Create and check material list descriptions for all minor substation material Demonstrate integrity and ethics in all client relationships and communications Answer technical questions posed by construction managers, field staff, project managers, customers and their representatives Recognize and recommend methods to improve customer’s experience Perform other studies as needed and required Travel periodically to customer offices for project meetings and to job sites for construction visits and testing Manage day‑to‑day activities of schedule and design of projects assigned to them Coordinate and problem‑solve between design teams and departments Expectations Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision Interact professionally with other employees and customers Work effectively as a team contributor on all assigned projects Communicate regularly with supervisor regarding designs, concerns, studies or tests Desire to participate in continued education and training Maintain check print set of all work they perform Utilize department resources effectively to get work accomplished on time and correctly Adhere to and practice the Beta core competencies and Beta principles Occasional overnight travel to active job sites Must have a clean driving record as use of company vehicles is a requirement of the position Education and Experience Bachelor degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Civil Engineering Strong background in Microsoft Word, Mathcad, Excel, and PowerPoint; strong verbal and written communication skills required Knowledge of AutoCAD, CDEGS grounding software, CYMCAP, LitePro, FEAP, Southwire SAG/Ten, Alcoa, Vehicle Tracking, SAP‑2000 preferred Working Conditions Work in an office environment with minimal exposure to dust, noise, and other environmental hazards Overnight travel required to an active construction site for a period of one or two weeks at a time; ability to perform duties safely and adhere to each job site’s safety requirements while outdoors Beta Engineering is an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer.
