Field operations staff work daily to support safe water delivery, wastewater collection, emergency repairs, and long-term infrastructure reliability throughout the city.Why You'll Love Working With UsOperate specialized heavy equipment in meaningful public infrastructure workWork alongside experienced field operations professionalsBuild valuable technical and operational skillsServe in a role that directly impacts public health and community servicesGrow your career through hands-on experience and advancement opportunitiesAbout the Role:The Heavy Equipment Operator performs water and sewer construction and maintenance work through the safe and effective operation of heavy equipment and related machinery.Key Responsibilities:Safely operate backhoes/loaders for daily water and sewer construction and maintenance activitiesOperate additional equipment, including skid steer loaders, track loaders, large excavators, and dump trucks as neededPerform work in compliance with OSHA trenching and shoring requirementsUtilize knowledge of utility locate color code systems and work zone safety proceduresSupport field crews during maintenance, repair, and emergency response operationsAssist with maintaining safe job sites and proper equipment operationParticipate in an on-call rotation for after-hours and emergency response workAdditional Position DetailsMust possess or obtain a Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of hirePosition requires work in all weather conditions and emergency response situationsRequires physical activity, including lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, and kneelingMust participate in an on-call rotationPosition is NON-EXEMPT under FLSAPotential Career PathEmployees in this role may advance into positions through training, certifications, and operational leadership development.Minimum Qualifications:High School Diploma/ GED OR an equivalency of 5 years of directly related work experience with Heavy Equipment as it pertains to the position1+ years of Heavy Equipment experienceValid Class A Commercial Driver's LicenseExperience Operating 2 and 4-lever backhoes (Must indicate backhoe types on application)Forklift LicensePreferred Qualifications:Welding Experience or Welding Certification
