Nurses are expected to be actively involved in patient care, including frequent rounding, de-escalation, safety monitoring and direct patient support.\n The ideal candidate is patient, calm under pressure, an excellent communicator and comfortable working with patients experiencing a wide range of psychiatric and behavioral health conditions.Required Qualifications\n \n Active Registered Nurse license\n BLS – Required\n CPI – Preferred\n Previous acute/inpatient psychiatric or state hospital experience – Required\n Strong de-escalation skills\n Excellent communication and interpersonal skills\n Ability to remain calm and patient in challenging situations\n First-time travelers are welcome\n Adolescent psychiatric experience – Preferred\n Patient Population\n The unit cares for both adolescent and adult psychiatric patients. Travelers may work with adolescents on one shift and adults on another, with the populations separated by a secure door.Common Diagnoses\n \n Depression\n Anxiety\n Substance abuse\n Alcohol-related disorders\n Other substance use disorders\n Psychosis\n Bipolar disorder\n Schizophrenia\n Behavioral disorders\n Personality disorders\n Rare opioid withdrawal cases\n \n Patients are medically cleared before admission to the psychiatric unit.Staffing & RatiosAdult Unit\n \n Typical ratio: 3:1\n Census may increase to approximately 7 patients\n Adolescent Unit\n \n Typical ratio: 6:1\n \n Mental Health Technicians/Aides are available to support the nursing team. When the unit is full at approximately 9 patients, staffing may include additional mental health support.\n Additional interdisciplinary support includes:\n \n Occupational Therapy Monday–Friday\n OT Assistant\n Social Work\n Mental Health Technicians/Aides\n Nursing Responsibilities\n Psych RNs are expected to be highly engaged in direct patient care, including:\n \n Comprehensive psychiatric and behavioral assessments\n Medication administration and monitoring\n Patient safety monitoring\n Therapeutic communication\n De-escalation of escalating behaviors\n Participation in treatment planning\n Monitoring patient behavior and mental status\n Assisting with 15-minute safety rounds\n Maintaining a safe therapeutic environment\n Collaborating with physicians, social workers, OT and other members of the care team\n Responding appropriately to behavioral emergencies\n \n Nurses are expected to be “doers” and actively participate in patient care rather than remaining at the nurses' station.Safety & Behavioral Management\n \n Mechanical restraints may be used rarely\n Seclusion is available when clinically necessary\n Locked inpatient psychiatric unit\n Emergency buttons available for Code Blue\n Code Yellow system provides additional staff support when needed\n Hospital security is available\n Life Safety Desk provides additional safety support\n IV / Medical Support\n IVs are very rare on this unit.
