Job Title: Pathologists’ Assistant

Location: Carbondale, IL
Employment Type: Contract (13 Weeks)
Shift: Day Shift (Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM)

We are seeking a skilled Pathologists’ Assistant to support diagnostic pathology services within a healthcare laboratory setting. This role is responsible for assisting with gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens , preparing samples for testing, and ensuring accurate clinical documentation.

The ideal candidate will work closely with pathologists, laboratory staff, and healthcare teams to ensure high-quality and timely pathology results.

• Assist with gross examination and dissection of surgical tissue specimens
• Prepare and submit specimens for histological and laboratory testing
• Accurately document specimen details and maintain tracking systems
• Summarize relevant patient medical histories for pathology review

• Work closely with pathologists and supervising physicians
• Coordinate with laboratory personnel and hospital departments
• Maintain clear and professional communication across clinical teams

• Adhere to departmental protocols, quality standards, and safety procedures
• Ensure accurate documentation and proper handling of all specimens
• Maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements

• Master’s Degree in Health Science, Pathology, or related field – required

• ASCP Certification – required

• Minimum 1 year of technical experience in a healthcare setting – required
• 2+ years of overall experience – preferred

• Expertise in surgical tissue grossing and dissection
• Knowledge of laboratory specimen handling and processing
• Strong clinical documentation and data accuracy skills
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities
• Effective communication and teamwork skills

• Ability to perform intermittent hand manipulation
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs occasionally

• Detail-oriented with strong technical pathology skills
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced laboratory environment
• Collaborative and able to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams
• Committed to maintaining accuracy, quality, and patient safety
