Job Description
Director of Government Affairs
Posting Date: 8/31/2026 Work Type: Onsite
About the Mobile Chamber
We’re a connector, convener and champion for a thriving business community, working every day to strengthen the Mobile area’s economic future. As one of the Gulf Coast’s oldest and most active chambers, we bring together business leaders, elected officials, and community partners to advance the priorities that keep our region competitive.
Our Mission: The Chamber will be the leading catalyst for economic expansion in the Mobile area, building more opportunity and an enhanced quality of life for all citizens and serving as a proactive change agent for the business needs to drive regional economic prosperity.
How We Work: We show up with purpose, communicate openly, and work collaboratively to support our members, our partners, and each other, always with a positive, community-focused mindset.
About our Communications and Advocacy Team
The Communications and Advocacy team leads the Mobile Chamber’s government affairs efforts, leveraging relationships with local, state, and federal officials to advance the priorities and needs of the business community. The team also supports the Chamber’s initiatives by telling the Chamber’s story, highlighting members, connecting businesses with opportunities to engage, and executing and overseeing the Chamber’s signature events.
About the Role
This is a full-time, onsite role (8:00 am-5:00 pm, remote Friday afternoons) with occasional evening or weekend events as part of community and partner engagement. Travels as necessary to fulfill job responsibilities and support organizational initiatives, including regular travel to Montgomery during the legislative session
We’re looking for an experienced Director of Government Affairs to lead our advocacy efforts and leverage relationships with business leaders, elected officials and community partners. If you’re a strategic thinker, skilled communicator and passionate about public policy, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on our region.
Why This Role Matters
At the Mobile Chamber, advocacy is how we turn the priorities of the business community into action. It's the difference between businesses facing challenges alone and businesses having a seat at the table where decisions are made.
As Director of Government Affairs, you'll build and leverage relationships with elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels to advance the issues that matter most to Mobile’s business community. You’ll coordinate the Chamber’s Governmental Affairs Committee, working directly with members to identify emerging issues, and represent the Chamber’s interests in Montgomery during the legislative session. This is a role for someone who wants their work to directly shape the business climate of an entire region.
What You’ll Do
- Manage the Chamber's government affairs and advocacy initiatives.
- Build and leverage relationships with local, state, and federal elected officials, community partners and business organizations to advance the Chamber’s priorities.
- Develop and advance policy priorities that support economic growth and business success.
- Coordinate the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee and engage business leaders in advocacy efforts.
- Coordinate legislative visits, policy discussions, and advocacy events, including regular travel to Montgomery during the legislative session.
- Support the planning and implementation of the annual Leaders Exchange “inter-city visit” to another community.
- Work with the Communications team to keep members informed on key public policy issues.
- Represent the Chamber at meetings, events, and legislative activities throughout the region and state.
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Five or more years of experience in government affairs, public policy, chamber management, economic development or a related field preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to build and leverage relationships with elected officials and community leaders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Strong organizational, project management and strategic thinking abilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, legislative tracking software, and other business technology tools.
- Working knowledge of the legislative process at the local, state, and federal levels.
- Ability to travel, including regular travel to Montgomery during the legislative session and occasional out-of-state travel.
- Valid driver’s license, passport, and reliable transportation required.
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
Why Join the Mobile Chamber?
This is more than a job; it’s an opportunity to help shape the future of one of the Gulf Coast’s most dynamic regions. As a 190-year-old organization representing more than 1,600 member businesses across southwest Alabama, the Mobile Chamber has a long track record of driving results, and this role puts you at the center of that work. You’ll work alongside business executives, community leaders, and elected officials, and join a collaborative team committed to strengthening our economy and creating opportunities for the Mobile area.
