Mainframe Software Engineer

Job Description At Regions, the Software Engineer oversees application development, modification, and maintenance of applications. This position monitors system applications, ensures system operations run smoothly, and creates reports and documentation outlining findings and solutions. This position is part of Regions’ Technology department. Primary Responsibilities Oversees development and installation of new hardware and software Provides advice and recommendations to management on processes and techniques required for improved work operations Installs and configures systems and other software Tests installed software for malfunction detection Identifies and resolves business system issues Designs and deploys new applications and enhancements to existing applications, software, and operating systems Measures effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems Develops and implements strategies to improve systems Monitors and tests system performance Oversees the training of junior engineers to improve job skills and work efficiency Maintains full ownership of a process typically Ensures compliance with risk‑management programs, rules and regulations, and cybersecurity practices; identifies opportunities for and supports process improvements; applies disciplined change‑management practices May act as a procedural expert This position is exempt from time‑keeping requirements under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay. Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field Seven (7) years of experience Skills and Competencies Ability to collaborate with programmers, developers, and other technology professionals to achieve a common objective Ability to conduct system analysis to detect issues with performance Ability to develop and implement technology solutions to resolve technical challenges Ability to interpret and ensure compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and industry guidance Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously Knowledge of software testing techniques, code optimization, and software debugging Strong communication, analytical, and problem‑solving skills Strong executional capabilities Thorough understanding of software structures, hardware, computing systems, and how to integrate them Additional Skills Core Mainframe Expertise Strong experience with IBM z/OS environment Advanced programming in COBOL, JCL, and REXX Hands‑on experience with CICS (Customer Information Control System) Database & Data Management Proficiency in DB2 for z/OS (SQL development, performance tuning) Experience with VSAM datasets and file handling Understanding of data integrity, reconciliation, and high‑volume batch processing Batch & Online Processing Designing and supporting batch jobs and scheduling tools (e.g., Control-M, CA‑7) Experience building and maintaining high‑throughput transactional systems System Integration Experience integrating mainframe systems with distributed platforms / APIs / middleware Familiarity with MQ Series (IBM MQ) or similar messaging systems Exposure to RESTful services or mainframe API enablement (z/OS Connect) Performance & Reliability Strong troubleshooting skills for production incidents and performance bottlenecks Knowledge of capacity planning and system optimization Experience in high‑availability and disaster recovery environments DevOps & Modernization (Strong Plus) Exposure to DevOps practices in mainframe environments Knowledge of mainframe modernization strategies (cloud integration, refactoring) Security & Compliance (Banking Focus) Understanding of mainframe security (RACF, ACF2, or Top Secret) Experience working in regulated environments (SOX, PCI‑DSS, or similar) Knowledge of data privacy and audit requirements Testing & Quality Experience with unit testing, system integration testing, and regression testing Strong focus on code quality, documentation, and audit readiness Soft Skills & Leadership Ability to lead design discussions and mentor junior engineers Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills Effective communication with business stakeholders and cross‑functional teams Experience working in Agile or hybrid delivery models Domain Experience (Preferred) Background in banking, payments, lending, or financial systems Familiarity with fraud systems or transaction processing systems Preferred Skills ISPW – mainframe change‑management tool used to manage development, promotion, and deployment of application code IWS – enterprise job scheduling and workload automation tool used on z/OS mainframes Regions will not sponsor applicants for work visas for this position. Position Type Full time Compensation Details Pay ranges are job specific and are provided as a point‑of‑market reference for compensation decisions. Other factors which directly impact pay for individual associates include: experience, skills, knowledge, contribution, job location and, most importantly, performance in the job role. As these factors vary by individuals, pay will also vary among individual associates within the same job. The target information listed below is based on the Metropolitan Statistical Area Market Range for where the position is located and level of the position. Job Range Target: Minimum: $127,767.75 USD Median: $168,210.00 USD Incentive Pay Plans: Opportunity to participate in the Long Term Incentive Plan.
