CDOC Part time Physician II MAT - Denver

Job Title

This part-time position provides comprehensive medication assisted treatment (MAT) for inmates with opioid use disorder in collaboration with the alcohol and drug (A and D) section of the mental health division of the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) within a secure correctional environment.

This part-time position will be for a total of 4 hours per week. Physicians are responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Providing treatment to inmates with opioid use disorder (OUD);
  • Performing and conducting medical histories to include substance use and psychiatric histories and performance of physical examinations pertinent to the treatment of OUD;
  • Ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests, appropriately schedule regular visits for OUD these offenders according to their treatment needs, and providing education on the seriousness of opioid use abuse and overdose;
  • Prescribing and adjusting methadone, buprenorphine mono and dual therapy, and naltrexone based on the clinical needs of the inmate;
  • Accountable for the work product of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. Accountability involves direct line authority, clinical supervision, consultation, education and other professional development activities relative to their performance;
  • Providing instruction, demonstration and training to other health care professionals;
  • Providing medical advice to other organizational units or health care specialties through consultation regarding patients with OUD ;
  • Position ensures that computer data entry, referrals and consultations, medical reporting, medical co-signature and inmate grievance requirements are completed in accordance with DOC Administrative Regulations, policies and procedures, clinical standards, State statute and medical directives;
  • Position responsible for attending quarterly medical review board meetings, monthly physician round table meetings and other division meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicant must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado as a Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy;
  • Applicant must be board eligible (completed residency) or board certified (passed all requirements or exams), by the appropriate board recognized by the American Medical Association, in one of the following specialty areas:
    • Emergency Medicine
    • Family Medicine
    • Internal Medicine
    • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
    • Preventive Medicine
Special Qualifications: (Special Qualifications are Required at the time of application)
  • Experience prescribing methadone as well as buprenorphine for OUD
  • Have at least 1 year of experience in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry
  • Board certification in his or her primary medical specialty and in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry is preferred

  • Skilled in office based procedures;
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in a complex environment;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language;
  • Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind.
  • Self-control, a strong sense of ability to work in stressful, potentially violent situations;
  • Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure and observant throughout their shift;
  • Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high-stakes interaction.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience providing medical care in a correctional environment;
  • Board certified in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine;
  • Experience managing chronic medical conditions as a Physician.
