Job Title
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform accessioning, dissection, histologic sampling, and gross examination of anatomical specimens under pathologist supervision, following established protocols
- Conduct frozen sections and other intra-operative consultations within procedural guidelines
- Accurately describe specimens and measurements using standardized dictation when appropriate
- Verify specimen identity to ensure patient safety and prevent errors
- Select appropriate specimen cassettes and initiate tissue processing as needed
- Carry out specialized hospital procedures, including cancer research protocols
- Operate laboratory equipment (e.g., Faxitron) safely and effectively
- Train and mentor students and new hires
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Pathologist or Administrator
Skills & Competencies
- Clear verbal communication, including use of dictation equipment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to recognize tissue types and biopsy specimens
- Self-directed with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong judgment and decision-making abilities
- Problem-solving skills, including troubleshooting and research
- Knowledge of and adherence to safety policies and procedures
- Extensive knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Education & Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a health or science-related field (required)
- Certification as a Pathologists' Assistant by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) (required)
- Completion of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists' Assistant program (preferred)
