Senior AccountantRiver Valley Holdings is a family-owned distribution company based in Syracuse, NY, serving retail customers across the northeastern United States. The River Valley family of companies; River Valley Foods, Cavallaro Foods, and Empire Valley distribute a wide range of specialty dry and frozen grocery items and consumable products from warehouses in Syracuse, NY.The Senior Accountant plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the company's financial reporting. This position is responsible for core accounting functions including month-end close, inventory and cost accounting, freight and vendor reconciliations, and financial analysis. The Senior Accountant partners closely with operations, purchasing, and leadership to support sound decision-making, strengthen controls, and continuously improve financial processes.Salary Range: $80,000 – $95,000 per year, based on experienceSchedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm OnsiteKey Responsibilities:Prepare, review, and analyze monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP and company policiesOwn key components of the month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, and various account reconciliationsManage inventory valuation, cost accounting, and related financial reporting in a distribution environmentAnalyze freight variances and perform vendor reconciliations to ensure accurate costing and margin reportingMonitor financial data and trends, providing insights to support planning, forecasting, and decision-makingAssist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis initiativesMaintain the general ledger and ensure accuracy of account balancesCollaborate with internal departments to improve financial processes, controls, and data integritySupport external audits by preparing schedules, documentation, and financial reportsProcess and verify payments as needed, ensuring proper coding and accuracyProvide backup support for Accounts Payable when requiredIdentify opportunities for efficiencies, process improvements, and stronger internal controlsPerform other related duties as assignedRequired Skills & Abilities:Strong knowledge of general accounting and cost accounting principlesSolid understanding of GAAP and financial reporting standardsProficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and financial analysis toolsExperience working with ERP systems in a distribution, manufacturing, or inventory-driven environmentStrong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skillsAbility to communicate effectively and work collaboratively across departmentsHigh attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlinesEducation & Experience:Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required3–5 years of progressive accounting experienceExperience with inventory valuation, cost accounting, and financial reporting requiredPrior experience supporting audits and close processes preferredPhysical Requirements:Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computerAbility to lift up to 15 pounds occasionallyBenefits:We offer competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package, including:Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, and Disability InsuranceFlexible Paid Time OffPaid Holidays401(k) & Roth IRA with company matchEmployee Assistance Program (EAP)Employee Purchase ProgramRiver Valley Holdings is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE)IND123
