Equipment Mechanic II

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has a vacancy for an Equipment Mechanic II that is based out of our equipment shop in Aurora. This position assists with the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of heavy equipment in the Metro Denver area.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assist with the diagnosis and repair of vehicle and equipment malfunctions on all major systems.
• Assist with the overhaul and rebuild of components and equipment.
• Use test equipment to diagnose defects or malfunctions.
• Work on vehicles and equipment such as 3.5-ton single axle and 10-ton tandem axle, tractor-trailers, front end loaders, motor graders, asphalt paving machines, and 15' mower tractors.
• Perform preventative maintenance and annual safety inspections.
• Use computers to track vehicle repairs.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
• Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

• Expected work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:30, but may be subject to change at any time. Summer hours will be Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm.
• May be required to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays
• Some on-call time is required
• Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where he/she can be reached for the purpose of responding to an emergency
• Required to lift up to 70 lbs.
• Required to bend, kneel, climb in/out of trucks when maintaining and repairing equipment
• Required to operate CDOT vehicles and heavy equipment
• Must be able to read, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions
• Frequent travel during work day to perform field repairs, as well as to attend trainings and meetings
• May be required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time hot and cold
• Exposure to loud noises
• Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin
• Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600V) and electrical shock
• Must be able to hear and communicate via cell phone and state radio to relay information and respond to field calls
• Due to locations of some of the equipment, must be physically able to work at 9-12,000 feet altitude
• Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties

Minimum Qualifications:

• Two (2) years of experience with a primary focus in automotive and/or heavy equipment repair and maintenance.

OR

• A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience equal to two (2) years.

Conditions of Employment:

• Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks.
• Must possess a current, valid regular or commercial driver's license.
• Must obtain a CDL Permit within 30 days of hire as a condition of continued employment. As part of obtaining your CDL permit, you must pass the DOT drug test and DOT physical.
• Must obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes within 6 months of hire as a condition of continued employment.
• Will be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e., drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider.
• On-call.
• Shift work.
• Essential Services Designation Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
• May be required to live within thirty (30) minutes' driving time in normal weather conditions to be able to respond in a timely manner after being notified to report to work. Knowledge of an emergency or hazardous condition may be considered to be notification to report to workstation.
• New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora, while veteran CDOT employees are required to attend training one week out of each year in Aurora.
