Licensed Nursing Assistant
Saint Johnsbury School District is seeking a Licensed Nursing Assistant to add to the health team for next school year. The St. Johnsbury School District serves more than 1,000 students, Pre-K through 8th grade and tuition our high school students to several area public and independent high schools. St. Johnsbury School District has approximately 550 students in Prek to Grade 8 and approximately 200 full-time employees all in one school. We have an excellent outdoor educational space, new playgrounds and a dedicated team with an emphasis on employee wellness. We are located 4 minutes from I-91 at Exit 21.
Overview
The Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) supports the health and wellness of students within a public school setting by providing direct nursing care, assisting with health-related tasks, and promoting a safe and healthy environment. Vermont State Board of Nursing - LNA Scope of Practice rules state that an LNA works under the license of the School Registered Nurse. This position follows a school year calendar working late August through early June. The LNA position works 175 school days, 4 professional development days and receives 8 paid holidays. The position will receive 12 sick days, 2 emergency days, 3 personal days, and 5 bereavement days. Hourly pay will depend on experience as an LNA.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Student Health Care:
- Assist in the monitoring, and documentation of assigned students' health conditions.
- Assist students with personal care and toileting needs.
- Administer medications and treatments as delegated by the School Registered Nurse and in accordance with school policies.
- Provide first aid and emergency care as delegated by the School Registered Nurse.
Records and Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and confidential records for assigned student.
- Document and report any changes in students status to the student services director and if it's a medical change to the School Registered Nurse.
- Assist with the completion of forms and paperwork for state and federal requirements.
Coordination and Communication:
- Communicate effectively with student, student services staff and directors, and teachers supporting student needs and others as necessary.
Safety and Compliance:
- Follow all safety protocols and health regulations.
- Participate in training and professional development to stay updated on best practices and regulations as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
- Current certification as a Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) in Vermont.
- Previous experience in a healthcare or school setting preferred.
- Certified in infant, child and adult first aid and CPR.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, parents, and school staff.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
Physical Requirements
Mobility:
- Ability to move quickly and efficiently around the school environment.
- Capability to assist students in moving, lifting, or transferring as needed. Training by the physical therapist is required yearly for proper transferring of a student.
- Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
Lifting and Carrying:
- Ability to lift and carry objects, including medical supplies and equipment, weight up to 50 pounds with two-person transfers.
- Capacity to help lift and support students who may need physical assistance as delegated by the School Registered Nurse.
Manual Dexterity:
- Skilled in performing tasks that require fine motor skills, such as administering medications, using medical equipment, and providing first aid as delegated by the School Registered Nurse.
- Ability to handle and manipulate small tools and medical instruments as delegated by the School Registered Nurse.
Physical Stamina:
- Capacity to endure the physical demands of a busy school environment, which may include long periods of activity and occasional physical exertion.
- Ability to respond promptly to emergencies that may require physical effort.
Vision and Hearing:
- Adequate vision to read documents, monitor students, and operate medical devices.
- Sufficient hearing to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents, and to respond to emergency situations.
Health and Safety:
- Ability to follow safety protocols and infection control procedures, which may include wearing protective gear and handling potentially hazardous materials.
- Good physical health to manage the demands of the role and to reduce the risk of injury or illness.
Emotional and Physical Resilience:
- Capability to manage stress and remain calm and effective in emergency or high-pressure situations.
- Ability to handle emotional stress associated with working with students who have health issues or emergencies.

- Ability to accurately follow care plans, monitor, and record students' health conditions as delegated by the School Registered Nurse.

- Skill in identifying potential health issues and implementing appropriate interventions or escalating them to the school nurse or other professionals as delegated by the School Registered Nurse.

General Health and Wellness
Physical mobility in all directions, lifting, carrying, walking, stair climbing and descending, physical presence, verbal communication, hearing, vision, and agility to move quickly and efficiently in emergency situations. Stamina to meet the physical demands of being a Licensed Nurse Assistant centered around engagement with children and staff in a busy, dynamic school environment. While not extreme, the ability to stay active, alert, and responsive is important.
