THE SCHOOL BOARD OF HIGHLANDS COUNTY

POSITION TITLE: Mechanic

ASSIGNMENT: Mechanic 5 - Transportation

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. A high school diploma or equivalent or trade school certificate.
  2. Five (5) years documented experience in the particular trade or craft.
  3. A valid Florida Commercial Driver's License or agrees to obtain within ninety (90) days.
  4. Physical Requirements: Ability to do strenuous physical tasks during the performance of duties, to include lifting up to 100 pounds, crawling, kneeling, bending, stooping, pulling, pushing, etc.
  5. Satisfactory clearance of a criminal history records check and drug screening.
ADDITIONAL DESIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Five (5) years progressively skilled automotive repair experience.
  2. Posses certification as a School Bus Inspector as provided by the Florida Department of Education.
  3. Knowledge of electrical systems, steering systems, hydraulic and air brake systems.
  4. Knowledge/experience with diesel engines, transmission and differential systems for trucks and buses.
  5. Knowledge/experience with automotive air conditioning systems.
  6. Physical ability to perform tasks that involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of heavily, physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (75-100 pounds) and occasionally more than 100 pound.
  7. Physical ability to perform skilled coordinated movements that involve moderate manual dexterity and demonstrate a mastery of the particular tools, equipment, materials and techniques of the trade or craft.
  8. Physical ability to perform tasks that require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odors, and depths. Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination, as well as oral communications ability.
  9. Physical ability to perform tasks in an environment that may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, odors, wetness, humidity, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, compressed air sources or toxic agents.
  10. Requires the ability to overhaul, restore, renovate, construct, and/or rebuilt equipment, machinery, or objects, requiring adherence to prescribed standards and specifications.
  11. Requires the ability to adhere to all established safety and housekeeping standards, to include regulatory entities. Ensures such standards are not violated.
  12. Possess or obtain, within one (1) year of employment, certification as a School Bus Inspector and trainer certification as provided by the Florida Department of Education.
PRIMARY PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Performs school bus safety inspections. Serves as lead inspector, instructs or advises less experienced mechanics in inspection and repair process.
  2. Inspector and Trainer certification as provided by the Florida Department of Education to train newly hired mechanics.
  3. Prepares bus inspection reports, performs bus inspections, and periodic maintenance and repairs. Documents completed repairs and complete work orders.
  4. Handles decisions to remove vehicles from service and the assignment of spare buses.
  5. Plans and organizes daily work routine for self and, if assigned, for the particular work site. Establishes priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time-management methodology.
  6. Performs repairs listed on the work orders and, if assigned, determines priorities of repair work for the particular work site, or as determined by the Garage Manager.
  7. Reports to the Garage Manager any necessary repairs not listed on the work order.
  8. Performs preventive maintenance according to assigned schedules as needed, i.e., changing oil, tires, transmission fluid, tune ups, filter and belt replacement. Repairs or replaces damaged or missing parts and components, i.e., mirrors, glass, windshields, windows, doors,wipers.
  9. Operates various standard automotive mechanics' tools and specialized testing and diagnostic equipment in performing assigned tasks (i.e., hand tools, laptop/diagnostic tools, torque meters, voltage meters, air tools, grinders and cutters, staple guns, jacks and lifts)
  10. Performs various testing tasks in ensuring vehicle roadworthiness and to ensure vehicles are prepared according to established route schedules, i.e., checking air systems and valves, tire pressures and conditions, testing electrical pathways.
  11. Performs service and repair on various automotive components and devices, i.e., mufflers, water hoses, starters, brakes, tires, plugs, radiators, cylinders, rotors, horns, wheelchair lifts.
  12. Diagnoses, repairs, and/or replaces electrical/electronic lighting systems, control systems, cooling systems, transmissions, starting and charging systems.
  13. Road tests vehicles to ascertain repair effectiveness; performs final inspection upon completion of service/repair prior to release.
  14. Performs cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles utilized per assigned work order; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe equipment use and operation.
  15. Avoids duplication of effort. Estimates expected time of completion for work elements, and establishes a personal schedule accordingly. Attends required meetings, planning sessions and discussions on time. Implements and monitors work site activity in accordance with priorities and estimated schedules.
  16. Utilizes computerized diagnostic and manual test methods in identifying service, replacement, and vehicle/bus/equipment repair needs.
  17. Maintains a clean, safe working area; removes trash.
  18. Responds to road calls for breakdowns. (Includes after-hour break down calls)
  19. Oversees parking and the security of the compound.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
  1. Requisitions or orders parts and supplies; assists in maintaining inventories of shop and truck stock items.
  2. Transports vehicles from one location to another.
  3. Washes and fuels vehicles.
  4. Performs welding when required.
  5. Performs related duties as required, and all duties assigned by the Garage Manager.
TERM:

Length of contract and number of hours worked are determined by specific allocation as approved annually during planning-budgeting process

APPRAISAL:

Performance will be appraised annually in accordance with School Board Policy

PAY GRADE:

According to the School Board of Highlands County Non-Instructional Salary Schedule
