Job Title: Emergency Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Emergency Duration: 22-26 week contract, end date flexible but must run through holidays Shift: Day/Night rotation Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years in an emergency department License: Registered Nurse Licensure Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification (AHA or RQI only) Must-Have: Two years of ED acute hospital experience as a registered professional nurse Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies the urgent or emergent care priority, and collaboratively provides direct care. The RN applies appropriate interventions and evaluates patient progress. The ED RN evidences skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions appropriate to manage life-threatening and routine emergency situations. The ED RN utilizes the principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain, discomfort, and safety. He/She assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems as appropriate. The RN connects with patients and families during triage and identifies the initial management of patients of all age groups. The RN assigns priority of care in accordance with Triage Standards. Establishing rapport with patients and families, the RN addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, assesses nonverbal communication, and provides frequent updates. The RN conveys and gathers information concisely and accurately. The RN conducts primary assessments of critical needs and detects and documents any major deviation from norms for all age groups within acceptable time frames. The RN correctly identifies necessary steps and interventions required. Using direct observation, patient/family interviews, EMS reports, and data, the RN conducts secondary assessments. The RN identifies contributing factors, health history, and events preceding the emergent health event. The RN assesses the psychosocial needs of each individual, including family dynamics, and documents and reports any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse. The RN reassesses patients to identify responses to treatment and/or changes in condition and responds appropriately. The RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to accomplish the best possible patient outcomes. The RN teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks and interventions consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. The RN understands personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. The RN prepares patients, parents, or families for diagnostic procedures and treatments. The RN makes appropriate referrals for post-emergency care. The RN teaches patients what is needed to continue care and healing at home. The RN assesses patient/family learning styles and structures sessions to maximize understanding. The RN asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in education and discharge instructions. The RN seeks to understand what is most important to patients and families, acknowledging that patients and families are the central focus of care and services. The RN embraces the importance of creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. The RN keeps patients and significant others informed of the process of care and anticipates patient/family needs. The RN maintains awareness of patients' conditions and updates communication boards throughout the stay.
