Engineering Technician

The School of Engineering at Shippensburg University is currently seeking applications for an Engineering Technician. The successful candidate will support the operation, development, and maintenance of Mechanical and Civil Engineering laboratories. This position will be responsible for laboratory setup, equipment procurement and installation, equipment operation and maintenance, safety protocols, and instruction support.

The successful candidate should have a general understanding of Mechanical and/or Civil Engineering laboratory practices and the ability to learn and work with a diverse range of laboratory equipment and technologies. The candidate will have a flexible schedule, but may have to work some evenings and weekends to meet the students' needs.

Key Responsibilities:

• Set up, procure, install, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment.
• Develop and implement laboratory safety procedures and maintain a safe working environment.
• Schedule and conduct laboratory sessions and assist students with course assignments.
• Support and supervise student projects, research activities, and engineering competitions.
• Collaborate with faculty and department administration on laboratory and instructional needs.
• Participate in student recruitment activities and engage prospective students and families by showcasing laboratory facilities and hands-on learning opportunities.

Laboratory Areas:

• Materials & Manufacturing: Furnaces, injection molding, CNC lathes and mills, sheet metal forming, welding, and cutting/forming equipment.
• Materials Testing: Static, fatigue, creep, hardness, corrosion, microscopy, nondestructive testing, and specimen preparation.
• Engines & Machines: Gasoline and diesel engines, pumps, turbines, vibration, governors, bearings, cams, shafts, gears, chains, belts, balancing, gyroscopes, and centrifugal force equipment.
• Thermodynamics & Fluids: Pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, piping systems, flow and friction measurements, drag/lift testing, turbines, pumps, and hydrology equipment.
• Structural Materials: Concrete preparation and testing, and testing of steel trusses, beams, and columns.
• Geotechnical/Soil: Percolation, filtration, void content, soil compaction, confined and unconfined testing, expansion, and swelling.
• Water Resources: Water quality testing, spectrophotometers, calorimeters, turbidity meters, titration systems, reactors, water purification, filtration, and drainage equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

• An Associate's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
• Demonstrated hands-on technical/mechanical work experience in machining and welding.
• Ability to draw/read sketches using engineering graphics software.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to support students and faculty to carry out projects and maintain labs and equipment.
• Must have an understanding of implementing safety measures required by Pennsylvania Labor & Industry.
