Job Description
Clinical Nurse

Job Summary:

The Clinical Nurse provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. This position is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting. The Clinical Nurse reports to the Nurse Manager/Director and is accountable for their responsibilities.

Essential Duties:

Education:
- Identifies and meets learning needs for self.
- Attends educational programs based on identified learning needs.
- Utilizes patient education materials relevant to patient populations with assistance.
- Assesses readiness to learn of the patient/family/caregivers.
- Evaluates the developmental level of patients and factors affecting their ability to learn.
Evaluation of Care:
- Identifies expected patient outcomes.
- Seeks guidance as needed in revising the plan of care.
- Participates in discussions with interdisciplinary teams to evaluate patient care.
- Communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.
Implementation:
- Demonstrates competence in care of patients with complex problems, including physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety aspects.
- Performs bedside point-of-care testing as necessary for patient care plans.
- Utilizes healthcare organization and nursing standards, policies, and procedures in care delivery.
- Organizes and prioritizes care based on patient/family needs.
- Consults appropriate resources timely regarding patients with complex care issues.
Leadership:
- Assists in developing goals for professional growth and addressing limitations.
- Achieves goals and objectives within designated timeframes or renegotiates with supervisors.
- Facilitates intra/interdepartmental collaboration and participates in unit goals and performance improvement activities.
- Promotes cost-effective care and provides feedback to coworkers.
- Maintains awareness of public policy and regulatory guidelines affecting the healthcare environment.
- Promotes a safe, clean, and secure hospital environment.
Patient Assessment:
- Recognizes data from complex situations to determine care priorities.
- Assesses and synthesizes relevant physical, psychosocial, education, and safety needs.
- Anticipates discharge needs for individual patients and families.
- Develops relationships with families to empower them in advocating for their needs and the needs of the patient.
Planning:
- Collaborates with patients/families to prepare or update the plan of care.
- Utilizes available multidisciplinary resources in care planning.
- Effectively communicates planning using a full range of communication methods.
- Addresses cultural and ethnic issues in planning patient care.
- Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex issues.
Research:
- Reads relevant journals and studies to improve practice.
- Brings ideas and questions to staff for assessment of applicability.

Required Skills & Experience:

One (1) year of nursing experience.

Education:

Required: Nursing Diploma, or ADN/ASN from an accredited school of nursing.
Preferred: BSN or MSN from an accredited school of nursing.

Certifications & Licensure:

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification (AHA or ARC).
