Maintenance Mechanic - 2nd Shift

Title: Maintenance Mechanic Division: Finance and Administration Department: Facility Operations and Planning FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Salary Range: Grade 9: $18.98/hour Position Summary Perform skilled maintenance tasks in support of structural systems, and equipment maintenance, renovations and rehabilitations, and instructional programs in a multi building University complex. Also perform skilled labor involving general maintenance skills including rough and finish carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, and/or mechanical work. Work is inspected for satisfactory compliance with instructions, although normal repairs and work assignments are made without supervision or close review. Duties/Responsibilities Tend to the preventive and general needs for maintenance of the University's structures, equipment, furnishings, and systems and for various assignments for repair and rehabilitation projects. Work from blueprints, drawings, work orders, or oral instructions to construct and repair University assets. Plan and execute basic building maintenance and renovation projects, determine tasks, making layouts, and estimating materials and labor costs. Assemble furniture, seats, and other equipment. Set up furniture and equipment for special and academic events. Perform carpentry tasks related to maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and construction projects for buildings, equipment, furniture, and systems. Perform plumbing tasks related to maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and construction projects for buildings, equipment, and systems. Repair and/or install windows, doors, partitions, coiling components, floor tiles, cove base, stair treads, wall coverings, and roofs, carpet squares, handrails, and shelves. Perform hand and bench work in the various maintenance shops. Operate various hand tools, carpentry equipment and tools, electrical tools, meters, plumbing tools and equipment, and other equipment as required. Perform painting, refinishing, and associated work to buildings, furniture, and fixtures. Perform electrical tasks related to maintenance, repairs, rehabilitation, and construction projects for buildings, equipment, and systems. Assist in maintaining building supplies, tools, equipment, and spare parts. Perform snow removal and paving work as required. Accurately cut and replace ceiling tiles to maintain the University’s Fire Code obligations and visual acuteness. Relocate, install dismantle, and remove furniture, equipment, and office cubicles from offices and/or buildings as needed. Install dry erase boards, cork boards, chalk boards, and miscellaneous art work as directed. Other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge and Skills High school diploma/GED required. Require vocational training and/or experience in trades including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, and/or heating and air conditioning, knowledge of its practices, procedures, materials and tools, skills in a variety of trades, and an ability to plan and layout job assignments. Valid driver’s license required. Knowledge of microcomputers, word processing, spreadsheet, and electronic mail software required. Preferred Knowledge and Skills Four years’ experience in journey level of a trade named preferred. Functional Requirements Ongoing physical access to departments and facilities throughout the University for extended periods of time. Frequent independent physical manipulation of loads of 20 to 60 pounds for extended periods of time. Occasional independent physical manipulation of loads of up to 100 pounds. Frequent physical positioning of oneself in order to access, examine, maintain and repair objects and areas in various configurations and at various heights, ranging from ground level to ten feet high. Intermittent use of a ladder, scaffolding, or other equipment to reach heights from eight to thirty feet. Ongoing manipulation of small objects and precision tools for extended periods of time to perform painting, electrical, repair, and maintenance tasks. Continuous independent assessment of building, equipment, and system performance to identify defects. Ongoing receipt and accurate understanding of instructions and other communications provided by supervisors. Proficient use of computers and computer systems (software and hardware) to send electronic communications, set up functions, enter data, and obtain information. Effective problem solving and the presentation of a professional demeanor while meeting deadlines under demanding conditions such as multiple priorities. Ongoing presentation of a positive demeanor while interacting and cooperating with University employees, students, and visitors. Ongoing selective attention to assigned tasks for prolonged periods of time. Ability to work an on-call rotation schedule that includes after hours and weekends, as necessary, to meet department needs. Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements Standard work hours are Monday through Friday 3pm to 11pm (2nd Shift). Occasional irregular hours or overtime may be required to complete work orders. This position will rotate through as the after-hours on-call rotation to perform emergency repairs for Campus and Housing as needed. Must be available when scheduled for on-call duties. This position is considered essential. When the University closes due to inclement weather or another emergency, this position is required to report to work to perform snow and/or ice removal or other clean-up work following severe weather or other emergencies. Travel within University and occasional travel to offsite University locations using a University vehicle is required.
