Job Description
Associate Veterinarian – Advanced Diagnostic Medicine
Location: Austin Metro, Texas
Position Type: Full-Time
Looking for something beyond traditional general practice or emergency medicine?
A specialty veterinary organization in the Austin metro area is seeking an Associate Veterinarian to join a highly collaborative team focused on advanced diagnostic medicine and complex case management.
This is an opportunity to practice medicine in a setting where the emphasis is on thoughtful diagnostics, patient care, collaboration, and clinical growth rather than a high-volume appointment schedule.
Previous advanced imaging experience is not required.
Veterinarians coming from general practice, emergency medicine, or specialty environments will receive extensive training and hands-on support to become comfortable working within this unique model of care.
The RoleAs an Associate Veterinarian, you'll manage patients undergoing advanced diagnostic evaluation while collaborating closely with specialists, experienced veterinary technicians, referring veterinarians, and the broader clinical team.
Responsibilities include:
- Performing comprehensive patient examinations and diagnostic assessments
- Developing diagnostic plans in collaboration with referring veterinarians and veterinary specialists
- Managing anesthesia and sedation for advanced diagnostic procedures
- Monitoring patients throughout procedures and recovery
- Reviewing laboratory findings and pre-anesthetic evaluations
- Collaborating with specialists on complex cases
- Communicating findings, recommendations, and next steps with referring veterinarians
- Providing compassionate communication to pet owners when appropriate
- Maintaining high standards for patient safety, medical quality, and documentation
- Helping coordinate patient flow and daily clinical operations
- Supporting an efficient and collaborative clinical environment
You do not need to come from an imaging background to be successful in this role.
The organization provides structured onboarding, mentorship, and hands-on clinical training designed to help experienced veterinarians transition into advanced diagnostic medicine.
Training may include:
- Advanced diagnostic workflows
- Cross-sectional imaging case management
- Ultrasound and radiography case coordination
- Specialty anesthesia and sedation protocols
- Image-guided diagnostic procedures
- Collaboration with veterinary specialists
- Referral communication and case consultation
As you become established in the role, there may also be opportunities to mentor veterinary interns, participate in education, strengthen referral relationships, and take on additional leadership responsibilities.
Why This Role Is DifferentThis position may be especially appealing to a veterinarian who loves medicine and diagnostics but is ready for something different from a traditional GP or ER schedule.
You'll have the opportunity to:
- Work with advanced diagnostic technology
- Collaborate closely with veterinary specialists
- Manage interesting and complex referral cases
- Develop new clinical skills with substantial training and support
- Spend more time focused on diagnostics and patient care
- Build relationships with referring veterinarians
- Work in an environment centered on collaboration rather than production pressure
- Continue growing clinically without needing prior advanced imaging experience
You may be a strong fit if you:
- Enjoy complex cases and diagnostic problem-solving
- Have a strong foundation in patient assessment and clinical decision-making
- Are comfortable with anesthesia and sedation
- Enjoy collaborating with other veterinarians and specialists
- Value a professional, supportive, team-oriented culture
- Communicate well with both veterinary professionals and pet owners
- Want to continue learning and developing new clinical skills
- Take pride in thoughtful, high-quality patient care
Required
- DVM or equivalent degree
- Eligibility for veterinary licensure in Texas
- Clinical experience in general practice, emergency medicine, specialty medicine, or another fast-paced veterinary environment
- Strong patient assessment and medical decision-making skills
- Comfort with anesthesia and sedation
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Collaborative approach to patient care
Preferred, but not required
- Three or more years of clinical veterinary experience
- Experience with diagnostic imaging or referral medicine
- Experience mentoring interns, veterinary students, or other veterinarians
- Interest in education, leadership, or practice development
The organization offers a competitive compensation and benefits package that includes:
- Competitive base compensation
- Performance-based incentive opportunities
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) with company match
- Paid time off and company holidays
- Continuing education allowance and paid CE time
- Professional development opportunities
- Leadership growth opportunities
- Employee pet care benefits
- Relocation assistance for qualified candidates
If you enjoy diagnostics, complex cases, and collaborative medicine but are ready to step away from the traditional GP or ER environment, this could be a unique next step in your veterinary career.
Advanced imaging experience is not required. What matters most is a strong clinical foundation, curiosity, a collaborative mindset, and the desire to continue learning.
