Histology Assistant/Grossing Technician (Dermatopathology) 

Location: Spek Diagnostics – Garden City, Idaho 

Schedule: 10am to 6pm 

Position Summary 

The Histology Assistant/Grossing Technician is responsible for the accurate gross description, dissection, and processing of dermatopathology specimens, including biopsies and excisions. This position supports the histology team through grossing and quality control activities, ensuring that all specimens are handled with accuracy, care, and in full compliance with laboratory standards and regulatory requirements.  We would love to work with a candidate who is experienced in gross, but we will also work with the right person who needs training.  

Key Responsibilities 

  • Specimen Grossing
    • Identify tissue type and describe specimens accurately according to established dermatopathology protocols (e.g. punch, shave, excision) 
    • Measure specimens in three dimensions and ink margins as appropriate
    • Section specimens properly to ensure complete microscopic evaluation 
    • Accurately label cassettes and verify specimen identification Review requisitions for clinical information, Accession requisitions Recognize and report unusual or complex specimens to supervising pathologist 
    • Understanding the impact of how a specimen is grossed for the outcome of a biopsy.  
    • Operate the tissue processor at designated intervals to maintain efficient batching workflow 
    • Maintain specimen container storage in accordance with laboratory procedures 
  • Accurately accession incoming specimen
  • Perform hand stains (e.g. special stains, IHC, direct immunofluorescence when applicable) with precision, following established protocols.
  • Quality, Compliance, and Maintenance
    • Perform quality control and instrument maintenance in accordance with written laboratory procedures 
    • Maintain accurate records, logs, and documentation as required by CLIA, CAP and state regulations 
    • Perform other related duties as assigned 
    • Communicate and facilitate equipment repairs or maintenance as needed 
    • Adhere to laboratory safety protocols, including the safe handling of sharp instruments, formalin, and other hazardous material 
    • Perform grossing activities under the supervision of a qualified pathologist and within the individual’s documented competency 
    • Perform other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience 

  • In order to qualify for Gross training, you will need either (1) 24 hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR (2) 24 semester credits of science courses with a MINIMUM 6 credits of chemistry, 6 credits biology, and 12 credits of chemistry/biology/medical laboratory technology OR (3) An associate or bachelor’s degree in laboratory science, medical laboratory technology, or one of the life sciences (e.g. biology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology).
  • Previous histology or grossing experience preferred but not required; on-the-job training provided. 

Required Skills and Abilities  

  • Ability to perform high-complexity testing and grossing under pathologist supervision. 
  • Strong understanding of laboratory safety, infection control, and universal precautions. 
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and time management. 
  • Knowledge of biology, chemistry, or other laboratory sciences. 
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Proficient in mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity for precision handling of tissue specimens. 
  • Effective verbal and written communication with laboratory and clinical teams. 
  • Basic computer literacy (LIS, Excel, and imaging systems).
