Speech Language Pathology Assistant
Under general supervision, a Speech Language Pathology Assistant will assist the Speech Language Pathologist in the screening, evaluation, development, and implementation of the speech language-related provisions of the educational program for students identified as eligible for these services.
1. Administer therapeutic treatment protocols, as written by the Speech Language Pathologist.
2. Perform clerical and administrative functions, such as obtaining case histories, completing observation checklists, and organizing and managing student data records.
3. Manage behavior using appropriately designed management techniques.
1. Accurately maintain records as required by state or federal laws, and Union County Board of Education policies, and/or school-based requests, and adhere to confidentiality requirements of state and federal law.
2. Escort students to/from therapy area.
3. Arrange the clinical-educational setting to maintain a safe and positive environment.
4. Summarize and record target behaviors during therapy sessions.
5. Manage, operate, program, and/or monitor equipment and materials.
6. Participate in meetings at the department, school, district, and/or parent/teacher conferences (with supervision of certified Speech Language Pathologist).
7. Provide for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading workshops, seminars, conference, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning.
8. Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications Desirable Qualifications
- Associate's Degree in Speech Language Pathology Assisting, or equivalent program
- Certified with the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologist and Audiologists
Thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology, normal communication development, phonetics, developmental psychology, various types of disabilities seen in school children, and various speech language disorders and approaches to therapeutic educational intervention, and roles of supervising speech-language pathologist and assistants.
Working knowledge of behavioral management practices and school operations.
Skills in obtaining case histories ang completing observation checklists.
Skills in administering speech-language screening and therapeutic protocols.
Skills in managing, operating, programming, and/or monitoring clinical-educational equipment and material, including assistive listening devices, augmentative communication devices, voice equipment, and computer-based equipment and software.
Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, and professionals.
Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
Ability to arrange the therapy setting to maintain a safe and positive environment.
- Ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities.
- Demonstrate attention to detail.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude while under pressure.
- Ability to work with diverse individuals and/or groups
- Requires the ability to interact with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
- Must be adaptable to performing in stressful and emergency situations
Exert force 10-25 lbs., frequently; and up to 50 lbs., occasionally; or a negligible amount of force to frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
Frequent standing, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Hearing and speech to communicate in person or virtual setting. Vision: Frequent near acuity and occasional far acuity. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment. Vision to read printed materials, a VDT screen, or other monitoring devices.
Indoor Exposure.
Uneven walking/working surfaces, communicable diseases, lifting, cleaning chemicals, lifting/carrying of materials, and power/hand-operated equipment/assistive devices and machinery (as related to specific assignment).
