TITLE: ASSISTANT FOOD SERVICE MANAGER

JOB GOAL: To ensure the safe and efficient operation of the school cafeteria for the ultimate health, wellness and benefit of the students. To manage, coordinate and oversee day-to-day food service operations at an assigned school site in the absence of the School Food Service Manager.


REPORTS TO: School Food Service Manager/District Food Service Director/School Principal

SUPERVISES: COOK/BAKER (NUMBER VARIES BY LOCATION)

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate OR demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law.
2. Minimum of two years experience working in food service operations, preferred.
3. Demonstrate leadership and management skills for working with team members.
4. Established skills in food preparation, following standardized recipes, use and care of commercial equipment.
5. Positive attitude toward students, staff, faculty and school.
6. Will be given the option to obtain the District-designated Food Safety Management Certification as required by the Kentucky Food Code within 60-days of hire and/or prior to first student report date.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

1. Basic computer skills including use of mouse and keyboard to navigate computer, e-mail, and websites.
2. Applicable District, State, and Federal Laws, rules and regulations related to food service.
3. Standard kitchen equipment, utensils and measurements.
4. Principles/methods of computing food quantity, food service preparation, serving and storage required by rotating menus.
5. HACCP/SOP for food service establishments, including sanitation and maintenance regulations.
6. Record-keeping techniques.
7. Principles and practices of supervision and training.
8. Interpersonal skills: tact, patience, and courtesy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist the School Cafeteria Manager in planning, organizing and leading the food service operations at an assigned school site; assure the serving and storage of food is in accordance with established guidelines and procedures.
2. Assist, prepare, and maintain assigned daily or monthly records and reports accurately and on a timely basis.
3. Oversee serving of meals to students, teachers and other staff; participate in food serving and preparation as needed;assure compliance with serving size requirements.
4. Assure proper cleanliness and maintenance of equipment and supplies used in the cafeteria; assure compliance with health, safety, and sanitation regulations.
5. Receive, inspect, verify and accept delivery of food and supplies; utilize proper methods of storing foods.
6. Confer with the food service manager regarding cafeteria needs, conditions and menu changes.
7. Maintain confidentiality regarding the identity of those students who are participating in the free and reduced-price meal programs and students who have allergies or special diets.
8. Participate in district in-service meetings and training programs for school food service personnel.
9. Report accidents and refer potential safety hazards to the cafeteria manager or Food Service Director.
10. Prepare, cook, bake and serve a variety of foods in quantity at an assigned school site; assist in other food preparation duties as directed; maintain facilities in a clean and sanitary condition.
11. Assist in determining appropriate quantity of food items for cooking and baking; adjust and extend recipes as needed; maintain food quality standards including appearance, and nutritional requirements.
12. Train and provide work direction to others as directed by manager or Food Service Director.
13. Monitor temperatures of food to assure safety and quality standards are met; monitor water temperatures to assure proper temperature for sanitizing.
14. Clean cafeteria equipment, utensils and appliances and store food supplies; assure compliance with kitchen sanitation and safety procedures and regulations; clean refrigerators and storerooms as required.
15. Assist and utilize proper methods in storing unused food and supplies; dispose of unusable leftovers.
16. Operate and maintain a variety of standard kitchen machines and equipment including slicer, chopper, mixer, steamer, dishwasher, electric warmer, range, oven,combi-oven, cash register, dishwasher and other cafeteria equipment as required.
17. Record amounts of food sold, and monies collected as assigned; assist with inventory and maintain routine records as directed; prepare records of foods cooked and foods left over.
18. Prepare and bake food for special events as needed; assist at banquets or special events as required.
19. Maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance during regularly scheduled work hours.
20. Participate in district in-service meetings and training programs for school food service personnel.
21. Participate in area, state and national workshops and other professional growth activities, as directed by the food services director/principal.
22. Performs other duties that may not specifically be covered in this general job description, as assigned by the School Food Service Manager/Food Service Director/Principal.
23. Acts in accordance with the by-laws and policies as set forth by the Owensboro Board of Education, KRS and KAR, and applicable Federal laws and regulations.
24. Demonstrates loyalty and dedication to the purposes and goals of the Owensboro Public Schools.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:


Indoor/outdoor environment. Required to go in and out of the walk-in freezer and refrigerator. Requires working with or near the public, parents, and children and will be subject to heat, cold, sounds, scents, and other related environmental factors.


EVALUATION:


Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel. Evaluation will be conducted by the Cafeteria Manager with input from the Food Service Director and Building Principal.

Must complete onboarding and on the job training deemed necessary by school food service personnel.
