Assistant Unit Director - Pediatric ICU - Evening/Night Shift

Job Description Supervises staff involved in providing clinical patient care. Assists in ensuring the quality of patient care delivery in a specific patient care area and serves as a role model for professional nursing practice. Assists with the administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources. May assume full responsibility for the unit in delegated areas and in the absence of the manager. Responsibilities Coordinates and monitors the patient care delivery system to assure quality care, and compliance with internal policy, external regulations and accepted practices across the continuum of care. Partners with managers across services (e.g., outpatient, children's, cancer center, etc.) to implement policies and procedures for coordination of care for all patient populations. Represents the department / unit on interdisciplinary committees on a range of patient care topics, such as patient satisfaction levels, workforce quality improvement initiatives, workflow efficiencies and clinical information systems. Provides mentorship / leadership to new and emerging nurse leaders to smooth the transition from clinical roles to formal leadership roles. Educates on the business side of healthcare, while maintaining the care side. Reviews and approves individual leadership development plans and assists with identifying resources. Manages a unit in a cost effective manner, consistent with the financial goals of the organization. Plans and is accountable for the annual operating and capital budget for areas of responsibility. Develops staff in collaborative decision making and shared governance. Creates an environment for a shared voice in nursing practice and the exchange of ideas to continually improve nursing and patient care outcomes. Responsible for employee recruitment, performance evaluation, progressive discipline, and staff development. Develops a strong culture of teamwork to ensure the quality of daily operations, effective interdepartmental collaborations, and the timely achievement of objectives. Works with clinical educators and leadership to evaluate core competencies in nursing care for the unit. Works with IT managers to plan and implement new or improved patient care information systems. Determines staffing needs and plans. Monitors performance of nursing units and nursing services. Coordinates activities with other units and departments regarding patient care. Works collaboratively with labor relations on bargaining unit issues and contract negotiations at the local level. Facilitates and oversees resolution of human resources, labor relations, employee safety and risk management issues. Promotes a positive patient experience through service recovery as needed, across the nursing unit. Required Qualifications Five (5) years recent RN experience in Pediatric Critical Care Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing Evidence of recent and progressive leadership experience Strong interpersonal skills to create and maintain a climate for effective communication and collaborative decision making Knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology, critical care unit operations, and patient care workflows and processes Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing, and compliance environments Preferred Qualifications Charge Nurse experience Three years progressive nursing leadership/management experience with patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations, and internal policies Knowledge to manage disaster incidents and critical events; strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills Strong leadership, fiscal, and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management, and staff from all disciplines Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration, and consistent achievement of objective Experience training and mentoring staff; experience preparing and presenting reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals Master’s Degree Required License/Certifications Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California Active American Heart Association BLS Certification Active American Heart Association PALS Certification About UCSF The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care. To learn more about the benefits of working at UCSF, including total compensation, please visit: About The Team The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 20-bed tertiary and quaternary medical/surgical intensive care unit that cares for critically ill neonates through adolescents. The majority of PICU patients arrive through our in-house, nurse-managed Transport Team and Access Center for care that can only be provided at UCSF Medical Center. These patients receive care for a variety of life-threatening medical and surgical conditions. Nurses on this unit learn the skills necessary to maintain vital functions for these fragile children, while supporting their families through difficult times.
