GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES/JOB OBJECTIVES: Participates in the planning and implementation of the health care provided within the Linn County Jail. Performs professional nursing work in compliance with standards set by the Oregon Board of Nursing.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED : Works under the immediate supervision of the Health Services Director and Jail Physician who assigns duties and evaluates performance and adherence to established policies.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED : Supervision of Corrections Deputies is not a regular responsibility of this position. In a medical emergency can exercise limited supervision over Corrections Deputies. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
A person employed in this classification must possess the capability to perform the following duties to be considered for and remain in this position. The duties are essential functions requiring the critical skills and expertise needed to meet job objectives. Additional specific details of these essential functions may be provided by the specific office or department job announcement, if applicable.
1. Review intake screening, assist in physical assessments and evaluate those adults in custody (AIC) who have specified medical problems.
2. Observe AIC behavior and physical condition, gather information on the AIC medical history and symptoms. Keep records of medical history.
3. Do liaison and coordination of health care with health care providers, hospital emergency rooms, private physicians, and mental health staff.
4. Provide nursing care to AIC with drug and alcohol addictions; assist in emergency cases and trauma. Call in prescriptions to pharmacies; administer medication to AIC in accordance with orders of physicians.
5. Hold sick call; collect specimens for further assessment or diagnosis such as communicable disease cultures, blood, etc.
6. Promote individual and group well-being through education activities including counseling, teaching and formal programs.
7. Nurse will exercise supervision, control and custody of AIC during the performance of their job duties.
8. Other duties as assigned by Health Services Administrator and Jail Physician.
9. Develops and maintains effective, harmonious, and reasonable work relationships with others. 10. Maintains regular and predictable work attendance.
OTHER FUNCTIONS : This classification covers the most significant essential functions performed by an employee in this position, but it does not include other occasional work, which may be similar to, related to or a logical assignment for the position. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY : Working knowledge of modern policies, procedures, and techniques for the care and treatment of AIC. Ability to exercise good judgment and act professionally and effectively in emergency and stressful situations. Knowledge of nursing principles methods and procedures associated with preventive measures in the maintenance of health in a jail. Knowledge of the uses and effects of medicines and narcotics. Ability to carry out written and verbal orders; exercise judgment within the scope of nursing principles. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with corrections staff, jail physicians and other agencies. Ability to work in a corrections setting. EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Current, unencumbered, Oregon License to practice nursing. Experience in Corrections nursing preferred. NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS : Be a citizen of the United States. Be 21 years of age or older. Be of good moral fitness, as determined by a thorough background investigation. Be free of any conviction for any felony; any misdemeanor involving violent behavior; or unlawful use, possession, delivery, or manufacture of a controlled substance, narcotic or dangerous drug. Pass a written and/or oral interview as prescribed by the Sheriff's Office. Be willing to work weekends, holidays, varying shifts and extra hours. Must pass a comprehensive psychological examination. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment may be a condition of employment. Possess and maintain a current, unencumbered license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Oregon. Must possess and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR card including instruction of the operation of Automatic External Defibrillators. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT : Work is performed primarily indoors. The work requirements include the ability to see, talk and hear. To sit, stand, walk, bend and stoop. Drive a motor vehicle, uses hands to finger, handle or operative objects or controls, reach with hands and arms and shift from minimal level of physical exertion to high street/high level of physical exertion at a moment's notice. The work involves potential exposure to blood products and cleaning materials. Must be able to lift and carry up to thirty (30) pounds.
