Job Description
The Manufacturing Technician is responsible for producing composite parts and structures using filament winding equipment and related machinery. This role focuses on modifying glass, carbon, and other fibers to meet detailed project specifications, while ensuring consistent product quality, accurate documentation, and safe operation of all equipment in a fast-paced production environment. This role is based in a production and manufacturing environment at a facility that produces composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV) for advanced aerospace applications. The work involves regular use of filament winding machines, resin mixing equipment, hoists, extractors, curing ovens, high-speed machinery, measurement tools, and a variety of hand and power tools. The environment is hands-on, mechanically focused, and team-oriented, with regular data entry into Excel to track production and quality information.
Responsibilities
- Develop a hands-on working knowledge of filament winding machines, resin mixing equipment, hoists, extractors, curing ovens, and all ancillary equipment used in the winding process.
- Produce composite products in accordance with standard operating procedures, process specifications, and written work instructions.
- Set up and tear down production machinery, validate machine progress throughout the run, and make adjustments as necessary to maintain quality and efficiency.
- Feed raw materials or parts into semi-automated machines and monitor operations to ensure proper processing.
- Gather required parts, subassemblies, tools, and materials to complete each production process efficiently.
- Position parts and subassemblies accurately by using templates or reading and interpreting measurements.
- Assemble parts to meet product specifications, using both hand tools and power tools as required.
- Perform weld inspection and verify that finished components meet quality standards and project requirements.
- Use measuring devices such as pi-tape, calipers, and air pressure gauges to confirm dimensional accuracy and performance.
- Operate power tools including hand saws, drill guns, and band saws in a safe and effective manner.
- Conduct data entry tasks, including entering production and inspection data into Excel or other tracking systems.
- Follow all safety guidelines and maintain a clean, organized work area within the production facility.
- Collaborate with team members and communicate effectively to support smooth workflow and continuous improvement in manufacturing processes.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 2+ years of manufacturing experience preferred, ideally in a production or assembly environment.
- Working knowledge of diverse high-speed machinery and basic production equipment.
- Ability to accurately use measuring devices such as pi-tape, calipers, and air pressure gauges.
- Ability to operate power tools including hand saws, drill guns, and band saws.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and comfort working with tools and machinery.
- Experience with composite materials, textiles, or related manufacturing processes is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with basic data entry tasks, including inputting information into Excel or similar software.
- Experience with Fanuc controls is a plus.
- Experience in assembly, composite manufacturing, or production operations.
- Familiarity with filament winding processes or composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV) manufacturing is beneficial.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with evolving processes and production schedules.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to following established procedures and quality standards.
