Duties Description JOB FUNCTIONSEssential Functions: Performs journey level electrical work and supervises others in the repair, maintenance and installation of electrical systems and equipment, following applicable electric code regulations and safety proceduresOperates, troubleshoots, and maintenance/repairs the campus utility systems including generators, HVAC equipment, fire alarms, and building management systemsEffectively uses and procures parts, operator/repair manuals, and performs/recommends possible repair solutionsDocuments and reports repair and maintenance needs including detailed sketches and part orders and overseas or perform repairs to completionGives verbal instructions and/or demonstrates proper and safe methods of performing electrical work and the use of electrician tools and equipmentExecutes, observes, and/or inspects work while in progress. Ensures that the job is done properly and that electrical codes are followedKeeps accurate and detailed records of all generator maintenance, inspection and testing as required by EPA, DEC, and Facilities & PlanningPerforms basic generator (diesel/natural gas) troubleshooting tasks, including but not limited to oil, battery, exhaust pipe, starter, and cooling system component changes. Troubleshoots and repairs of AC & DC electrical equipment including transfer switch repairs, coil and relay replacements, load testing and identifying connected loadsCoordinates and performs routinely scheduled load tests with campus departments and outside vendors as neededCoordinates or performs corrective and preventive maintenance to components of the generator systemJob Requirements: Working knowledge of electrical theory as applied to the electrical tradesWorking knowledge of practices and techniques of the electrical tradeWorking knowledge of the mathematics of the electrical tradesWorking knowledge of applicable standards and electrical code regulationsAs assigned, working knowledge of the operation and repair of digital timing devices used in traffic control signal systemsBasic knowledge of electronic theory and practice as applied to the electrical tradesAssigned, working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the facility governing the activities of persons for whom the State has custody or responsibility under the supervision of an ElectricianAbility to read circuit diagrams, architectural blueprints, and generator and motor control diagramsAbility to use the tools, equipment, and materials of the electrical tradeAs assigned, ability to train and supervisor othersOperating Needs: Performs journey level work including the planning and laying out of work, and the diagnosis of trouble in electrical systems or equipment for the entire facility including emergency generatorsReads and understands wiring diagrams and blueprints, and written proceduresWorks with independence as is typical of journey level workersPossess a valid New York State Driver license, Class D or above. (other than a motorcycle license) that will be verified through the NY State Dept. of Motor Vehicles. Must pass LENS checkDemonstrates experience with all facets of electricity including but not limited to electric services (all voltage levels), motor control systems, fire alarm systems, building management systems, lighting, and emergency power systemsCapable of medium to heavy labor and liftingWorks efficiently from bucket trucks, motorized lifts, scaffolding, ladders, and in confined spacesPerforms skills necessary to meet code requirements of the equipment maintenance safely and protect system integrityHas a strong AC electrical background required. Demonstrated three phase AC electrical background necessary including use of test equipment.Demonstrates ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructionsDemonstrates experience to diagnose various mechanical and electrical equipment failures and recommend possible solutionsDemonstrates experience to comprehend and effectively use parts, operator, and repair manualsIs willing to participate in training necessary to operate and maintain all equipment related to this positionHas previous successful experience and/or technical training with generator maintenance and repair programBasic computer skills for work orders and PM schedulesAvailable for scheduled and unscheduled overtime to support 24/7 utility responsibilitiesKnowledge or ability to obtain it to maintain all equipment related to this tradeAbility to work in a diverse college community in a team-oriented environmentObtain Asbestos Supervisor Certification within six (6) months of hire

Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:Non-competitive: Four years of full-time experience in electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a two-year electrical training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.*Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee 1Full-time permanent service in a position allocated at Grade 12 or below which is primarily engaged in the performance of unskilled and semi-skilled labor and trades tasks; must be 18 years of age or older; possess a High School diploma or general equivalency diploma recognized by the New York State Education Department; and be proficient in English and Math.Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee 2Successful completion of a 52-week probationary period as a Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee 1; completion of 45 hours of technical math coursework and 15 hours of blueprint reading/schematics coursework or passage of an equivalency exam or proof of successful completion of equivalent training; 144 hours of electrician trade-specific instruction; and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training. Trainees must maintain a “C” or better average in their coursework.When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.Preferred Qualifications:Demonstrates computer experience preferably with building management systems and maintenance management softwareHas previous experience in a large facility electrical repair and installation environmentHas training in variable speed drive maintenance and repairHas confined space experience in high voltage maintenanceARC flash trainingExtensive relevant journeyman level electrician experiencePossesses a High School Diploma or GED
