Karen Family Liaison
HCPA is a Title I Charter School that serves students through a school-wide plan for instruction that is focused on the needs of at-risk students. The Karen Family Liaison serves as a liaison between students, parents, schools, businesses, agencies and the community to connect families and students to resources and supports, to help them be successful in school and as a family unit.
Responsibilities
- Assists with the coordination and improvement of parent, school and community communications and the academic achievement of all students.
- Increases parental involvement and engagement in the school.
- Encourages parent participation in their student's classroom at school-wide events.
- Organizes parent/community activities and events by providing information and resources.
- Participates in regular parent meetings and events around topics of key concerns to parents.
- Identifies and responds to day-to-day parent concerns related to school and school community.
- Works with the administrative team to resolve parent issues in a timely manner.
- Serves as a contact and mediator/translator between parents and school.
- Provides student support as needed.
- Maintains confidentiality of information regarding students.
- Assists with the communication of student concerns.
- Assists with student enrollment, paperwork, etc. and family integration into school.
- Responsible for growing the student population and maintain long standing relationships with families
- Increases annual student population as needed and achieve marketing goals.
- Assist in ongoing parents/student outreach and/or phone calls to current parents/students to retain current enrolled students.
- Coordinates and assists all school events.
- Translates and interprets as needed (translate documentation as required: fliers, letters, materials, etc.).
- Helps build relationships with the Karen communities and organizations in the area
- Assists in developing communications.
- Assist in ongoing home visits as needed.
- Provide assistance to other departments as needed.
- Supervise student activities, which may include:
- Bus duty – Assist with morning and afternoon busses duties as determined by the school.
- Breakfast and/or lunch duty – assist with monitoring students during lunch and breakfast as needed.
- Complete additional tasks as deemed necessary by the School Director, which may be delegated by the appropriate Manager.
Accountabilities
- Supports school goals and objectives consistent with the vision, mission, and values of HCPA.
- Participates in creating a culture of excellence, teamwork and collaboration amongst the staff, teachers, students, and families; a culture that is positive, open to the views of others, and uses social skills to resolve conflicts.
- Establishes and maintains effective and cooperative relationships with students, parents, teachers, and other school staff.
- Responds appropriately and promptly to parent, student, and staff member needs.
- Maintains strict confidentiality regarding students and the educational setting.
Engagement Activities
Volunteer activities
One volunteer activity is Required. Salaried employees may select the activity that best fits with their interests and areas of expertise. These activities may include school dances, prom, concerts, theatre productions, etc.
Required activities:
- Attends Fall and Spring Parent /Teacher Conferences
- Attends Kindergarten Round-up
- Attends New Student Open House
- Attends HCPA Graduation
- Supports at least 3 marketing/enrollment events outside of HCPA in the evening and/or during the weekends throughout the fiscal school year.
- Supports the monthly Student Enrollment Nights at HCPA.
- Translates and interprets for Karen families.
Misc. Committees
There are many additional opportunities for salaried staff to engage with the community and personally expand their skills. Participation in these committees is highly encouraged.
Work Environment/Conditions
- Coordinates and assists school events.
- Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment; the school building is a multi-level building that has an elevator and is accessible.
- Duties will require working with families and community members outside of the school environment, such as community centers, stores, or other public places.
- Position requires extensive interaction with children and families of all ages and groups.
- Possible exposure to loud and noisy locations.
- Operate standard equipment (computer, fax machine, telephone, copier machines, etc).
- Fast-paced environment.
- Requires frequent keyboarding, which calls for repetitive motion and rapid eye movements, and frequent use of the telephone.
- Position requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time and to push, reach, or bend.
- Position requires the ability to stand and interact with families and community members at school or other community/public places.
- Work will require weekends, evenings, and some travel.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Associate Degree or equivalent of experience.
- Ability to work in a cooperative and collaborative learning environment.
- Knowledge of computer operation, applications, data entry, and retrieval.
- Knowledge of office procedures, practices, and policies.
- Knowledge of first aid procedures.
- Ability to work under pressure, completing work in an accurate manner while meeting conflicting deadlines and schedules which are often set by others despite frequent interruptions.
- Strong interpersonal skills - the ability to work effectively with students, parents, district staff and community members from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to multitask.
- Knowledge of the programs, functions, and procedures of a school setting.
- Ability to remain calm in emergency and stressful situations.
- Ability to exercise initiative and sound and effective judgment within established guidelines.
- Ability to Analyze situations carefully and adopt effective courses of action.
Preferred Qualifications
- Karen language knowledge is helpful, but not required.
- 3+ years of administrative experience
