Fire Recruit (I want to be a firefighter!) Location: City of Griffin Description An individual in this position will respond to various emergencies, including fires, medical incidents, accidents, explosions, natural catastrophes, and hazardous material incidents where he/she extinguishes fires, rescues people and animals, provides emergency medical care, and mitigates hazards. Essential duties include: Prevents, combats and extinguishes fires with the goal of protecting lives, the environment and property. Responds to and controls fires using water hoses, fire extinguishers, and water pumps. Provides timely responses to emergencies to bring them under control, stabilizing the incident, and restoring order. Locates and rescues occupants and animals of burning and/or hazardous buildings and/or environments; performs vehicle extrication. Analyses hazardous situations and thinks of quick solutions and takes action. Responds to fire alarms, potential gas leaks, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, rescue calls, and other emergencies. Provides first aid, CPR, and other emergency medical care to sick or injured individuals. Participates in search, rescue, and recovery operations. Operates a variety of specialized tools and equipment for firefighting safely and effectively. Drives, operates and maintains firefighting apparatus, pumps, trucks, engine, ladders. Performs general maintenance on firefighting equipment and vehicles. Completes a variety of reports; reviews fire reports for accuracy. Teaches and participates in training classes, exercises and drills. Assists in public relations and fire/life safety education activities. Conducts fire prevention and pre-plan inspections. Removes debris from roadways in emergency situations. Helps prepare meals, performs daily cleaning tasks within the firehouse, related buildings and grounds. Performs related duties. This is a 24-hour position with the regular hours of 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. the following day, followed by two days off. With a 24-hour shift, Firefighters need to have extensive stamina that allows them to address dangerous situations effectively on a moment’s notice at any time. Required training may fall outside of the regular schedule. This is an hourly position at a pay rate of $18.18 per hour. Position Requirements The physical demands of firefighting are significant. The equipment is very heavy, and immense strength is necessary for getting through certain obstacles during firefighting and carrying individuals out of danger. The employee must be able to frequently grip, lift, raise, pull, and carry heavy objects (e.g., equipment, hoses, people) of up to 100 pounds unassisted, and maintain physical activity for extended periods of time. The employee must be able to sit, stand, walk, climb ladders and stairs, and navigate through confined spaces and smoke-filled structures for extended periods of time while in complete turnout gear and extreme heat. The employee must have a keen sense of smell and the visual ability to distinguish between shades of colors, detect dangerous obstacles, other vehicles or equipment, and pedestrians. The employee must be agile and coordinated to navigate challenging environments and perform tasks quickly and efficiently. The employee must be able to use a variety of tools or equipment that require a high degree of dexterity. The employee will be exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, dust, dirt, water, smoke, gas, contagious or infectious diseases, blood, and irritating chemicals; therefore, the use of durable specialized fire‑resistant turnout gear, helmets, hood, gloves, boots, and other life‑saving Personal Protective Equipment is provided and required. The employee will perform work in high‑traffic areas and have a high presence of citizens, which may contribute to the complexity and stress of the position. The employee will work in an indoor controlled environment of a firehouse setting, and outdoor environments in all forms of weather that may be hot, cold, inclement, or extreme. Certain medical conditions and medications can disqualify a candidate. Knowledge of fire and emergency response principles, techniques, equipment and standards. Must have good judgement and the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations remaining helpful and pleasant at all times. Must have proficiency in the use of computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Must have clear written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interpret and relay such information to fellow firefighters and victims. Must have good interpersonal skills to interact professionally and build good working relationships. Must excel at both conveying ideas and listening to instructions. Must have the ability to remain calm under pressure. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must successfully complete the basic aptitude entrance exam to advance to the physical agility requirements. Must successfully pass the minimum physical agility requirements upon employment and continually thereafter. Must complete a physicians’ medical exam that will evaluate overall health and ensure fitness for duty. Must not have been convicted of a felony in any jurisdiction in the ten years prior to the date of employment, unless otherwise defined in O.C.G.A. 25‑4‑8 (2). Skill in the interpretation and application of various policies and procedures. Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles and equipment. Having good moral character as determined by investigation of the criminal history of the candidate to verify that there is no recent pattern of offense that may indicate less than good moral character. High School diploma or GED. Possession of a valid State of Georgia driver’s license, acceptable driving history, and the ability to drive a vehicle as needed. Ongoing Conditions of Employment State of Georgia Provisional F license will be required one year from employment date; F license required two years from employment date. Once an EMT‑B license class is available, the class must be taken and passed. The EMT‑B license must be obtained within six months of the date the class ends. Current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act. National Professional Qualification (NPQ) Firefighter I certification within the first year of employment. NPQ Firefighter is defined as 320 hours of certification training to include Hazardous Materials Operations and GA Basic Firefighter curriculum, and an additional 120 hours of specialized training in flammable and combustible liquids, pressurized containers, and introduction to rope rescue operations. Obtain NPQ Firefighter II within the second year of employment. Completion of Emergency Medical Responder course within the first year of employment. Completion of the following GA Public Safety Training Center Courses within the first two years of service: Structural Fire Control, Pressurized Container Fire Control, Crash Victim Extrication 1, Interior Search and Rescue, and Handling Flammable and Combustible Liquids. Annual obtainment of 24 hours of accredited training; twelve to be outside of the department.
