Our organization is in search of a Pathologists' Assistant to become a part of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the only academic medical center in the Capital Region.
This role is ideal for a Pathologists' Assistant who thrives in a setting that offers complex and varied surgical pathology, significant professional independence, close collaboration with pathologists and residents, and an active involvement in education and laboratory practices .
As a vital member of the surgical pathology team, you will collaborate with subspecialty pathologists, pathology residents, histology experts, and other laboratory personnel in a dynamic academic environment that presents a wide range of challenging cases.
In your capacity as a Pathologists' Assistant, your responsibilities will include:
Conducting gross examinations, descriptions, dissections, and sampling of a diverse array of surgical pathology specimens, from routine biopsies and resections to large, intricate oncologic specimens.
Assessing and preparing tissues for intraoperative consultations and frozen sections, working directly with pathologists during critical clinical decision-making moments.
Documenting and photographing gross specimens while ensuring precise specimen orientation, sampling, and submission.
Acting as a resource for challenging or atypical specimens and contributing to the maintenance of high-quality grossing practices.
Instructing and mentoring pathology residents and other learners in gross examination, dissection, specimen management, and surgical pathology techniques. We encourage and support the pursuit of an academic title through our Appointments and Promotions Committee.
Collaborating with pathologists, residents, histology staff, operating room teams, and laboratory leadership to enhance quality and workflow continuously.
Engaging in quality improvement initiatives, procedure development, validation, education, and other departmental projects based on your interests and expertise.
Qualifications We Seek:
A Master's degree from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists' Assistant program , ASCP certification as a Pathologists' Assistant (PA(ASCP)) , and a current New York State Pathologists' Assistant license (or eligibility to obtain licensure in New York State).
Strong understanding of gross anatomy, surgical pathology, specimen handling, and laboratory safety.
Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and communication abilities.
Capability to work both independently and as part of a team in a high-volume academic setting.
Prior experience in an academic or high-volume surgical pathology practice is preferred but not mandatory.

Primary location: 43 New Scotland Avenue, Albany, NY 12208
Work hours: Monday to Friday, either 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM or 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM

Our main campus serves as the academic referral center for the region and is part of a larger health system, providing our pathology team with access to patients and specimens from across northeastern New York and western New England.
The main campus features two active operating room suites and a nearby same-day surgery center. Our laboratory processes around 25,000 surgical specimens annually, supported by a diverse team of histotechnologists, grossing technicians, pathology assistants, and 16 residents.
Our health system, in collaboration with other local hospitals and health services, serves over three million individuals across 25 counties.
