Head of Technical Underwriting - Liability

We are looking for a Head of Technical Underwriting - Liability based in Chicago or New York Your Team The North American Liability team offers a wide range of liability insurance solutions, including National Accounts Excess, Multinational, Reverse Flow, Environmental Liability, and some Primary General Liability in the United States and Canada. The Impact You Will Have Reporting to the Regional Head of Liability – North America, you will lead an experienced team that provides underwriting guidance, planning, and strategy development for Liability – North America. Your team will also deliver data analytics to measure, analyze, illustrate, and guide performance, and participate in annual planning and reinsurance placement processes. Responsibilities Support for Underwriters Strengthen risk selection, risk assessment, and the appropriate application of coverage, exclusions, terms, and conditions. Maintain, implement, and articulate underwriting guidelines, positions, and compliance rules. Partner with underwriting leadership and technical stakeholders to support training and referral processes. Research, monitor, and articulate emerging trends to inform underwriting decisions. Underwriting Authority Assist with clarity, simplification, distribution, and communication of underwriting guidelines and authority levels. Coordinate referral processes to Global Product Group Leaders, including documentation and follow‑up. Underwriting Quality Coordinate and execute underwriting audit file reviews and prepare for reinsurance audits. Develop, communicate, and track strategies and action plans from audit findings, measuring effectiveness of changes. Communication with the Global Chief Underwriting Office Maintain regular communication with global line‑of‑business leaders to promote consistency and alignment in underwriting practices. Disseminate underwriting guideline updates and changes to ensure underwriters remain informed. Underwriting Training Support continuous learning initiatives related to new underwriting approaches, rule changes, strategic direction, emerging trends, and compliance requirements. Portfolio Steering Develop, measure, and refine underwriting strategies based on performance results, underwriting insights, and market trends. Use data analytics to inform book management decisions and underwriting shifts. Illustrate and communicate portfolio management results using tools such as Excel, Salesforce, Foundry, and PowerPoint. Lead cross‑functional projects and initiatives to deepen the organization’s risk understanding. Pricing Assist field underwriters in calibrating and using pricing tools for accurate decision making. Assess pricing tool output quality to enhance precision and inform portfolio steering. Collaborate with actuarial partners to calibrate pricing tools. Support the Head of Liability in evaluating and communicating target pricing guidance. Planning Process Support the annual financial planning process in collaboration with the Regional Head of Liability and the Global Chief Underwriting Office. Reinsurance Process Coordinate with internal stakeholders to gather data, documentation, and insights required for treaty submissions. Compliance and Product Management Oversight Ensure adherence to form and rate filing requirements and promote proper usage across underwriting teams. Communicate changes in forms, regulations, or rating plans to underwriters. Collaborate with Legal and Compliance partners on product development and regulatory matters. Operations Coordination Collaborate with operations leadership to coordinate underwriters and supporting staff in executing underwriting support activities. Underwriting Platform Management Coordinate with system developers and technology partners on electronic file documentation, pricing systems, data quality and entry improvements, analytics, front‑door metrics, future global platforms, and system training. What You’ll Bring to the Role Minimum 11 years of liability underwriting experience, with in‑depth knowledge of liability risks and training underwriters on risk selection and analysis. Experience with P&L planning for finance, providing data to leaders and reinsurers to ensure accurate results. Strong relationship building with brokers at peer‑group level and locally. Significant experience leading and developing direct teams, including coaching, mentoring, and performance assessment. Experience using Praedicat to track emerging trends and update underwriting guidelines. In‑depth knowledge of pricing tool functionality, calibration, and analysis to drive profitability. Proficiency with tools such as Radar, Salesforce, Foundry, Excel, and PowerPoint for data analytics and performance illustration. Computer skills, including VBA, R, SQL, Java, etc., to analyze complex data. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for influencing stakeholders across locations and functions. Project management skills in milestone and task planning, resource management, and reporting. Ability to persuade and motivate others without executive authority. Experience integrating AI into business functions to enhance efficiency and foster data‑driven innovation. Bachelor’s degree. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future employment‑based sponsorship. Annualized base pay range: $160,000 – $250,000. Base salary is one component of the total compensation package, which also includes annual performance‑based cash incentive awards. Location: Chicago or New York.
