Underwriting Consultant

The Underwriting Consultant is a senior-level underwriting professional responsible for evaluating and classifying complex, high-face-amount individual life insurance risks. In this role, you'll exercise advanced technical expertise and independent judgment while serving as a key resource within the Underwriting department. You'll influence sound risk selection decisions, support underwriting quality, and collaborate with internal and external partners to deliver exceptional service and business results.

Your role and impact

• Independently evaluate and classify complex life insurance applications in accordance with company underwriting guidelines, mortality pricing assumptions, reinsurance agreements, and risk management practices.
• Assess medical, financial, occupational, avocational, foreign travel, residency, and other mortality risks while making well-supported underwriting decisions.
• Manage large and complex cases with underwriting authority of $5 million or greater without co-signature requirements.
• Serve as a senior technical resource by providing second-level reviews and co-signature support on cases that exceed other underwriters' authority limits or require advanced technical review.
• Partner with producers, distribution partners, internal sales teams, and Home Office associates to explain underwriting decisions, adverse actions, and financial determinations.
• Mentor and support other members of the Underwriting department through technical guidance and expertise.

What sets you up for success

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience preferred.
• FALU and FLMI certifications preferred.
• Minimum 8 years of progressively responsible individual life insurance underwriting experience, including complex medical and financial underwriting.
• Advanced knowledge of life insurance underwriting principles, human physiology, medical impairments, financial underwriting, occupations, avocations, and reinsurance practices.
• Strong understanding of reinsurance concepts, including retention, automatic binding limits, jumbo limits, and facultative underwriting.
• Excellent analytical, documentation, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to communicate complex underwriting decisions effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to serve as a technical resource and mentor within an underwriting team.
