Heavy Equipment Mechanic / Shop & Field Mechanic

Anderson Underground — Sauk Rapids, MN

Anderson Underground is hiring an experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic to support underground utility construction operations from our Sauk Rapids location.

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.; some flexibility available
Pay: based on experience and travel flexibility
Overtime: Expected during peak maintenance periods, particularly during winter and equipment returns
Travel: Periodic travel to project locations in Minnesota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Iowa, and other areas as needed
Per Diem: Provided for qualifying travel
Company Vehicle: Provided for work-related travel

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose, repair, and maintain directional drills, plows, trucks, trailers, excavators, skid steers, backhoes, trenchers, and other utility construction equipment.
• Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and field repairs to reduce downtime.
• Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, diesel, and emissions-related issues.
• Travel to job sites to assess equipment problems and support field crews.
• Prioritize repairs based on safety, operational needs, equipment availability, and crew schedules.
• Coordinate outsourced repairs with vendors, dealerships, and third-party repair facilities.
• Communicate equipment status, repair timelines, parts needs, and downtime updates to crews and supervisors.
• Maintain accurate service records, work orders, inspection reports, repair notes, and parts documentation.
• Support shop organization, equipment readiness, seasonal maintenance, and DOT and OSHA compliance.
• Use email, timekeeping systems, maintenance software, and other company programs as required.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid Class A CDL with an acceptable driving record.
• At least three years of experience repairing heavy trucks, utility equipment, underground construction equipment, or similar heavy equipment.
• Hands-on experience maintaining directional drills, plows, or comparable underground utility equipment.
• Experience with hydraulic systems, electrical diagnostics, diesel engines, and emissions systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot and complete repairs independently.
• Ability to travel and work overtime when needed.
• Basic computer skills for email, documentation, work orders, and company systems.
• Ability to pass required background and drug screenings.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical or vocational certification.
• OSHA 10 certification.
• Experience supporting utility, fiber, telecom, gas, or underground construction operations.
• Experience coordinating repairs with outside shops, vendors, and dealerships.
• Experience managing repair schedules, equipment inspections, parts inventory, or shop workload.
• Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage changing priorities.
• Clear communication with crews, supervisors, vendors, and management.
• Ability to read schematics, service manuals, technical drawings, and equipment documentation.
• Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery.
• Strong organization and attention to detail.
• Ability to balance shop repairs, field calls, inspections, parts needs, and repair documentation.
