Transportation Planner

About the role Steer North America is looking for a motivated, self-starting, problem-solver and collaborative professional to fill our Transportation Planner position in the Planning and Design team, which has contributed to our company’s ongoing success in the United States, Canada, and beyond. You should have a background in project management and behavior change analysis, including market segmentation analysis and stated preference surveys, in order to support teams and projects across Steer. You will be a contributing member of Steer’s North American teams which is comprised of planners, economists, designers, financial modellers and technical specialists. In combination, these disciplines provide us with the breadth and depth to deliver innovative and impactful solutions to our diverse clients. The Transportation Planner will: Work alongside colleagues to conceptualize, develop, and deliver on new and existing client projects, including in multimodal planning, regional planning, TDM, and equitable and sustainable mobility. Some examples of the kinds of projects that you may be involved in: Identifying transit needs and prioritizing investment across California’s state highway system Creating a Smart City Strategic Plan for the Southern California region Determining service options for new BRT routes across New Jersey Examining the economic impact of rail on economically distressed regions Reviewing and revising internal program requirements for major transit agencies Manage their own work, and the work of others, to budget and quality expectations Support Steer’s Planning & Design practice via client engagement, work winning, and proposal development Serve as an in-house resource in the areas of behavior change analysis Mentor and support early career professionals About the candidate At Steer, our employees are self-motivated, goal-oriented, and adaptive. The ideal candidate for this role has: 5-10 years’ relevant experience in the transportation or planning sector, though consultancy or public sector work; Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, Master’s degree preferred Experience developing successful proposals for public sector requests (including EOIs, RFQs, and RFPs); The ability to work autonomously yet collaboratively with colleagues and our clients in a fast-paced environment; An existing right to work in the United States or Canada; Knowledge & Experience: Ability to provide technical leadership across multiple disciplines or skills, such as: strategic planning for public sector transportation agencies; multimodal planning, governance and public policy development, business case development, and data analysis and visualization Experience with one or more complex transportation models and related analytical tools, such as GIS, EMME, TransCAD, R, Python or similar; as well as visualisation tools such as Illustrator, InDesign, Tableau, Power BI or similar Successfully led or had a lead role on transportation planning and policy projects; Proven experience with behavioural change analysis tools and concepts commonly used in the transportation industry, such as market segmentation and stated preference surveys; Capabilities: Effective consulting skills: listening and clarifying client problems, understanding project scope, managing time and resources, ensuring margins; Effective communication skills: distilling your work in a succinct and compelling manner both verbally (written/oral) and graphically (graphs, flow charts, infographics); Experience working on projects that emphasize decision making, governance, and policy development; Experience with public sector clients, including major agencies or ministries related to transportation, housing, land use, energy, and community and economic development; Project and team management skills – including utilization planning, task allocation, and commercial management of consulting projects; How You’ll Grow Whether you join immediately after graduation, or as a senior leader, Steer is committed to helping you grow your career in ways that add to your breadth of experience on a variety of projects, the depth of your technical skills with clients, your client and project management knowledge, and your leadership awareness and practice. Be advised that this is an estimated benchmark salary of good faith. All compensation, regardless of location, may be subject to change as skills, abilities, and internal equity are considered. In addition to base salary, all employees will be eligible for an annual discretionary performance bonus. Steer reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional compensation.
