Elementary Special Needs Teacher

Special Education Teacher (Grades 1-4)

Provides specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in grades 1-4 to ensure access to the general education curriculum and progress toward Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. The teacher collaborates with families, general education teachers, and support personnel to provide a positive, inclusive learning environment that promotes academic, behavioral, social, and emotional growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities.
  • Provide specialized instruction aligned to Louisiana Student Standards and individual student needs.
  • Implement accommodations, modifications, and behavioral supports as outlined in student IEPs.
  • Monitor student progress toward IEP goals and maintain required documentation and progress reports.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and families to support student success.
  • Conduct assessments, collect data, and use data to inform instructional decisions and interventions.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and district special education regulations and procedures.
  • Create and maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, parent conferences, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Utilize evidence-based instructional strategies and interventions to support student achievement and growth.
  • Participate in required district and school professional development activities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field required.
  • Valid Louisiana teaching certificate in Special Education (Grades 1-5 or appropriate grade band) in accordance with Louisiana Department of Education guidelines.
  • Experience teaching students with disabilities in an elementary school setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of IDEA, IEP development and implementation, accommodations, modifications, and behavior intervention strategies.
  • Knowledge of Louisiana Student Standards and elementary instructional practices.
  • Strong classroom management, communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze student data and use data-driven instruction to improve student outcomes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, families, and school personnel.

Reporting Structure: The Special Education Teacher reports to the school principal and/or designated district supervisor and is responsible for providing high-quality instruction and support services to students with disabilities while ensuring compliance with all applicable special education requirements.
