PRIMARY PURPOSE: Facilitate clear and effective communication by interpreting and transliterating in sign (using the student's preferred mode of communication) to and for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students in the academic setting. QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Education/Certification:
Minimum Experience :
Experience working directly with adults or children that are Deaf or Hard of hearing.
Experience working with children/students, parents, or persons with disabilities.
Experience working in an academic setting, Preferred MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB DUTIES:
Instructional Support
Posture: Prolonged siting and standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Frequent walking; repetitive computer work with frequent use of hands and wrists
Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment. May be required to lift or transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities Environment:
Possible exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases. Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise Mental Demands:
Reading; ability to communicate effectively (verbal and sign language)
Maintain emotional control under stress
Maintain professionalism with all staff members Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidents immediately to the supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety. - High School Diploma or GED, Required
- Valid certification as interpreter granted by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) (Level 1-5, Basic, Advanced & Master)
- Must meet one of the following:
- Associates Degree OR 60 credit hours from an accredited institution of higher learning
- Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL), PSE, CASE, and/or Signing Exact English (SEE)
- Knowledge of Deaf culture, and Deafness
- Must be 18 years of age
- Ability to clearly interpret or transliterate information for staff and students during following (but not limited to): classroom lectures, school related programs, assemblies, testing environments, and ARD Committee meetings using sign language systems and/or language such as PSE, ASL, or SEE.
- Ability to accurately voice interpret information for staff and students during the following (but not limited to): classroom lectures, school related programs, assemblies, testing environments, and ARD Committee meetings using sign language systems and/or language such as PSE, ASL, or SEE.
- Ability to match the preferred method of communication of student and staff.
- Knowledge of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to work with students and adults who are Deaf/hard of hearing.
- Ability to accurately site translate
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to speak effectively to groups
- Ability to arrive on time to each assignment/class/activity
- Ability to be mobile and have own transportation
- Knowledge of general office equipment
Minimum Experience :

Instructional Support
- Interpret in educational settings including classrooms, co-curricular activities, school-related programs and meetings, conferences, staff development, and other situations.
- Attend and interpret Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings as needed.
- Tutor Deaf/Hard of hearing students under the direction of RDSPD classroom teacher.
- Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each Deaf/Hard of hearing student's communication needs.
- Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned students.
- Help supervise Deaf/Hard of hearing students throughout school day, inside and outside classroom including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
- Help manage Deaf/Hard of hearing student behavior including intervening in crisis situations when necessary.
- Help maintain RDSPD administrative records and prepare required reports.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
- Participate in faculty meeting and special events as assigned.
- Arrive on time to assigned classes/meetings/activities
- Only performs duties related to the State Deaf grant 100%; All federally funded incumbents of this position must comply with time and effort reporting requirements through personnel activity reports or periodic certification, as appropriate
