Description
The Deputy Sheriff is responsible for performing a broad range of law enforcement duties to ensure public safety and uphold local, state, and federal laws. This role involves patrolling assigned areas, responding to emergencies, investigating crimes and accidents, enforcing laws and regulations, managing evidence, and providing courtroom security and prisoner transport. Deputies interact regularly with the public and are expected to exercise sound judgment, professionalism, and integrity in all situations.
The full range for this position is $69,939 - $97,836. A shift differential of $1.25 per hour may apply.

Job Duties
- Enforce local, state, and federal laws by patrolling assigned areas, issuing citations, conducting arrests, and responding to calls for service.
- Investigate criminal incidents and traffic accidents; secure and process crime scenes; collect and document evidence; interview witnesses and suspects.
- Respond to public requests for assistance, including medical emergencies, dispute mediation, welfare checks, and other community concerns.
- Prepare detailed reports and maintain records of law enforcement activities in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Provide courtroom security, serve legal documents and warrants, and transport prisoners as needed.
- Operate and maintain department vehicles, firearms, and specialized equipment.
- Execute high-risk operations, including search warrants, tactical responses, and underwater search and recovery when required.
- Maintain a professional presence and positive relationship with the community through proactive engagement and educational outreach.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Associate degree or two-year technical certificate in Law Enforcement or a related field.
- Must possess or be eligible for a Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) license at time of appointment.
- Principles and best practices in patrol operations, investigation, and crime prevention.
- Use and maintenance of law enforcement vehicles, firearms, and specialized equipment.
- Local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and court procedures.
- Report writing standards and documentation practices.
- Safety procedures, defensive tactics, and physical restraint techniques.
- County geography and jurisdiction-specific procedures.
- Basic computer systems and software used in law enforcement operations.
- Applying law enforcement techniques and legal standards in real-world scenarios.
- Using a variety of law enforcement tools and weapons.
- Investigating crimes and documenting findings accurately.
- Maintaining composure in high-stress situations.
- Communicating effectively with the public, coworkers, and legal professionals.
- Preparing thorough reports and testifying in court proceedings.
- Collaborating with other law enforcement agencies and community partners.
- This position requires heavy physical exertion including:
- Lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly.
- Performing physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and restraining individuals.
- Working in varied environmental conditions, including exposure to hazardous materials, extreme temperatures, intense noise, and potentially dangerous or confrontational situations.
- Must possess a valid Minnesota Driver's License and maintain a clean driving record.
- Must pass a comprehensive background check.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States.
