Job Description Summary
This is a part-time casual (as needed) position at Pickerington Methodist Hospital.
Minimum Qualifications and Specialized Knowledge
- Bachelor of Science or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited institution (Required)
- Current Ohio pharmacist license (Required)
- Basic Life Support Certification – current or obtained during orientation (unless >50% of scheduled hours are completed off‑site or not in a patient care setting)
- ASHP accredited residency or equivalent pharmacy practice experience
- Pharmacy Board Certifications or other certifications
- Advanced‑level degree in a health‑care field
- Collaborative practice experience
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (may be required as determined by manager)
- Pharmacokinetic drug dosing experience
- Drug therapy management experience
Job Summary
This position is responsible for pharmacist tasks such as dispensing and compounding medication, counseling patients on medication and health subjects, interpreting prescriptions, managing patient drug therapy, and performing drug utilization analyses. Pharmacists must work efficiently both independently and as part of a team, possess critical thinking and problem‑solving skills, and multitask as appropriate. Strong interpersonal skills – including effective mentorship, clear communication and collaboration, empathy toward patients and colleagues, and the ability to build trust in professional relationships – are required. Pharmacists collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other health‑care practitioners to provide safe, high‑quality, and cost‑effective drug therapy, may administer medications as permitted by state law, and serve as preceptors for pharmacy students and residents.
Responsibilities and Duties
Acute Care / Infusion
- 50% – Review provider orders for drug choice, dosage form, dosing schedule, and potential drug‑drug interactions or allergies; contact providers to clarify orders as needed; dispense and compound medications; ensure labeling and drug therapy‑related devices comply with standards and policies; interpret prescriptions; prepare care plans to optimize therapeutic outcomes.
- 20% – Manage individual drug therapy by initiating, monitoring, and modifying prescriptions in a consulting relationship with a provider; provide drug information to providers, other health‑care professionals, and patients.
- 10% – Counsel individuals on drug therapy, recommend drug therapy–related devices, assist in selecting non‑prescription drugs for common diseases and injuries, and provide instruction on proper use.
- 10% – Provide associate and learner development and training, including precepting students and residents; deliver educational programs for pharmacy, nursing, and medical staff as needed.
- 10% – Direct and guide pharmacy technicians and pharmacy support personnel.
Ambulatory Care / Population Health
- 50% – Manage individual drug therapy by initiating, monitoring, and modifying prescriptions in collaboration with a provider; prepare individualized care plans to ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes and maximize adherence; provide drug information to providers, other health‑care professionals, and patients.
- 20% – Partner with patients, caregivers, and other health‑care professionals to prevent, manage, or slow disease progression through patient advocacy, wellness and health promotion, triage and referral, patient education, and self‑management.
- 10% – Assist with guideline/policy development and implementation; participate in performance improvement initiatives, including those for practice advancement.
- 10% – Provide associate and learner development and training, including precepting students and residents; deliver educational programs for pharmacy, nursing, and medical staff as needed.
- 10% – Direct and guide pharmacy technicians and pharmacy support personnel.
Retail
- 50% – Review provider orders for drug choice, dosage form, dosing schedule, and potential drug‑drug interactions or allergies; contact providers to clarify orders as needed; dispense and compound medications; ensure labeling and billing procedures are correct; follow standards of practice and pharmacy policies.
- 20% – Counsel individuals regarding their drug therapy, recommend drug therapy–related devices, assist in the selection of non‑prescription drugs for common diseases and injuries, and provide instruction on proper use.
- 10% – Manage individual drug therapy by initiating, monitoring, and modifying prescriptions in collaboration with a provider; provide drug information to providers and other health‑care professionals.
- 10% – Provide associate and learner development and training, including precepting students and residents; deliver educational programs for pharmacy, nursing, and medical staff as needed.
- 10% – Direct and guide pharmacy technicians and pharmacy support personnel.
Medication Safety, Stewardship, & Utilization
- 55% – Lead safety, stewardship, and utilization strategies for designated sites in collaboration with the system team; facilitate and manage activities of site and system committees and clinical guidance councils; develop and enforce policies that promote safe, effective, cost‑efficient medication therapy; use data and best‑practice standards to identify opportunities for proactive change and improve patient outcomes.
- 20% – Provide associate and learner development and training, including precepting students and residents; deliver educational programs for pharmacy, nursing, and medical staff as needed.
- 10% – Direct and guide pharmacy technicians and pharmacy support personnel.
- 5% – Review provider orders for drug choice, dosage form, dosing schedule, and potential drug‑drug interactions or allergies in various pharmacy practice settings; dispense and compound medications and drug therapy‑related devices; ensure labeling and compatibility; prepare care plans to optimize therapeutic outcomes.
- 5% – Manage individual drug therapy by initiating, monitoring, and modifying prescriptions in collaboration with a provider across inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory care settings; provide drug information to providers and other health‑care professionals.
- 5% – Counsel individuals on drug therapy, recommend drug therapy‑related devices, and assist in selecting non‑prescription drugs for common conditions across all care settings.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (Required)
- Doctor of Pharmacy (Required)
- RPH – Registered Pharmacist – Board of Pharmacy Specialties
