Job Summary & Qualifications Laboratory Assistant (Full Time, days/weekends rotate). The Lab Assistant performs any three of the following non‑technical functions under supervision and assists in specimen collection, processing, and patient registration. Responsibilities include: Demonstrate understanding of specimen collection and testing requirements, including rejection criteria. Proficient in venipunctures and/or finger sticks on pediatric, neonatal, adult and geriatric patients. Proficient in heel sticks on infants as required. Use supplies appropriately and follow established procedures for patient identification and specimen collection based on test orders. Complete appropriate specimen collection documentation and educate patients/families about procedures. Use computer information system relative to job functions. Handle clerical duties (faxing, phone, pneumatic tube system, reports). Prioritize duties and plan completion. Review Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and pending specimen issues, taking appropriate action. Receive laboratory specimens into the laboratory information system. Perform registration and order entry with accuracy and timeliness. Label specimens and aliquots according to protocols and testing orders. Centrifuge and aliquot specimens appropriately; prepare for courier pick‑up with special instructions. Discard specimens per schedule. Perform periodic preventive maintenance and quality assurance procedures. Collect chain‑of‑custody drug collections per policy. Maintain records of specimen problems and take corrective action. Clean area after emergency spills. Assess specimen requirements for referral testing and troubleshoot any issues. Process, sort, and prepare specimens for referral labs. Monitor status of referred testing and ensure results are delivered within turnaround times. Communicate and troubleshoot problem specimens promptly. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Interact with co‑workers in a team environment promoting harmony. Exhibit excellent customer service practices in all interactions. Effectively communicate with all personnel to exchange accurate and timely technical information. Assist in communication to customers, floors, physicians regarding problem specimens. Hold 2 or more years experience in registration, clerical duties, and specimen processing. Follow safety policies and procedures. Protect sensitive and confidential information through Privacy & Security Awareness. Adhere to company policies and standards regarding security. Complete assigned courses and training annually. Available to work during disasters. Education & Experience Vocational/Technical Degree Preferred. 1 to 3 years in a clinical laboratory setting preferred.
