HVAC Mechanic II- (2 Positions)

Job Description Montgomery College is seeking to fill two full‑time HVAC Mechanic II positions. Both positions are located at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. Work hours for the two positions are as follows: Tuesday‑Saturday, 6:30 am‑3:00 pm, and for the second position, Tuesday‑Saturday, 2:30 pm‑11:00 pm. Under supervision and/or direction, incumbents in this job class perform skilled HVAC work including installation, operation, modification, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and retrofitting. The positions are both grade 23, bargaining, non‑exempt positions. For non‑exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Contacts and interaction vary and may involve multiple constituencies such as direct interaction with the faculty, colleagues, managers, directors, students, vendors, assigned staff, contractors and consultants for providing and receiving instructions and information. Duties include but are not limited to Maintain, install and repair commercial heating and air‑conditioning systems, controls and related subsystems and components. Diagnose and troubleshoot air distribution, air balancing, stratification, building insulation and vapor deficiencies. Repair or replace failed sensors, transmitters, and transducers for control systems. Repair, retrofit or install new direct digital control system hardware. Adjust boilers, chillers, air handling units, motor controls and refrigerant systems’ operating parameters from their own interface panels or the building automation systems (BAS). Install, maintain and retrofit new electro‑mechanical relay logic control circuits, pneumatic logic controls, damper or valve actuators and/or variable frequency drives. Perform program maintenance work and routine checkups to ensure the DDC system continues to operate as commissioned, including backups and database server maintenance. Monitor and inspect construction projects and contract work to ensure compliance with contractual agreements and with national, state and local code requirements. Maintain records of work performed and parts and materials used. Maintain records of equipment operation logs to include temperature, pressures, volts, amps, combustion efficiency reports, safety inspections and equipment refrigerant records. Maintain records of equipment failures and repairs. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications High School diploma or GED required. Five years of experience in heating, cooling and ventilation systems. The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered. Comprehensive knowledge of the design, maintenance, repair and use of DDC and HVAC systems, chiller operations and related software. Comprehensive knowledge of operations and maintenance of buildings and building systems to include heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing and energy systems. Comprehensive knowledge of the methods, procedures and techniques of the HVAC trade. Working knowledge of occupational hazards and ability to proficiently and safely use tools and equipment pertinent to the trade. Working knowledge of building and fire codes related to work performed in the HVAC trade. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, control diagrams, HVAC equipment and electrical schematic control wiring diagrams. Ability to understand material and supply requirements. Ability to read, understand and follow written, verbal and visual instructions. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to instruct and train lower‑level employees. Ability to work cooperatively with others. Basic computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), the Internet and Windows‑based applications. Licenses and Certifications Maryland Journeyman level HVAC license. EPA Universal 608 certification. Valid driver’s license is required.
