General Maintenance Mechanic

Under the general direction and supervision of the Director of Maintenance or his or her designee, the General Maintenance Mechanic performs preventative maintenance routines, limited construction projects and conducts general repairs within facilities throughout the Borough.

Minimum Qualifications (GMM I):

High school diploma or GED. A minimum of three (3) years of experience within the past five (5) working in a commercial facility maintenance or construction role. Must have/maintain a working knowledge of the current Uniform Building Code. Must possess a current, valid and unrestricted Alaska driver's license; may be required to achieve/maintain a Class A commercial driver's license (CDL). Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Certifications: Commercial plumbing and/or electrical and/or carpentry experience. Training and experienced in working with the control of hazardous energy (Lock-Out Tag-Out). Playground Safety Inspection Certification. Fire Extinguisher Technician Certification. State of Alaska Asbestos Abatement Certification. Working knowledge of the International Fire Code.

Essential Functions (GMM I):

1. Maintains and repairs physical structures and various equipment. 2. May perform work tasks relating to: minor electrical, carpentry, minor plumbing. 3. Manages and notes daily tasks, work time, materials and activities to correlate with a work-order time/asset management system. 4. Conducts regular preventative maintenance inspections on equipment, making necessary adjustments or repairs. 5. Assists with moderate building renovation projects. 6. Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools and equipment in a manner congruent with Borough safety policies and procedures. 7. Promotes safe practices within departmental group and throughout the Borough. 8. Performs required work with reference to and compliance of all governing codes (EPA, OSHA, NFPA, IBC, UBC, UPC, NEC, ASME etc). 9. Adheres to established departmental policies and procedures. 10. May perform asbestos removal or containment duties. 11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions and Minimum Qualifications (GMM II): 1. GMM I essential functions, and: 2. Demonstrates sufficient knowledge of facilities, internal processes and sufficient mastery of required trade knowledge, as assessed by the Department Head and as displayed in the ability to work independently, with little oversight, on a daily basis. 3. Performs moderate building renovation projects that are planned by others. 4. Has worked within the Borough Maintenance, General Maintenance department for a minimum of a six-month period or holds a journeyman license in a construction trade.

Essential Functions and Minimum Qualifications (GMM III): 1. GMM I and II essential functions, and: 2. Plans and performs moderate building renovation projects. 3. Utilizes the documents library of the Borough (blueprints, P&ID's and O&M manuals) in order to diagnose and resolve facility issues. 4. Primarily works in an area where other trade presence (Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, and Electronics) is not readily available and regularly performs tasks in support of those trades: or holds EITHER a Playground Safety Inspection certification or a Fire Extinguisher Technician certification and is required to perform work associated with the held certification.

Physical Demands

1. Work is performed while standing, sitting and or walking. 2. Requires the ability to communicate effectively utilizing speech, vision and hearing. 3. Requires the use of hands for performing simple grasping and fine manipulations. 4. Requires ability to balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb and reach. 5. May require the wearing of a respirator. 6. Requires the frequent transport of up to 50 lbs. and occasional transport of up to 100 lbs. 7. Exposure to moving machinery, dust, fumes and vapors and drastic changes in temperature and humidity. 8. May require traveling in small aircraft and/or staying out of town overnight. 9. May require working at heights.

Prescription Drug Plan Note: Calendar Year Deductible: Individual - $2,000* Family - $4,000* * Medical and prescription deductibles are combined and cross-accumulate * Medical and prescription out-of-pocket maximums are combined and cross-accumulate Employee Health Premiums per Pay Period (24 per year): Employee $47.50 ($95/month) Spouse $47.50 ($95/month) Children (1 5) $12.50 (per each child / $25 per child/per month) Children (6+) $75 ($150 total/month) Dental Plan Calendar Year Deductible Individual - $75 / Family - $250 Annual Maximum Benefit per Person - $2,500 Vision Plan There is no deductible applicable to the Vision Plan, Eligible expenses include eye exams, lenses and frames and contact lenses. Dental/Vision Premiums per Pay Period (24 per year): Coverage for employee and all eligible, enrolled dependents $15 ($30/month) Borough Contribution to HSA or HRA Health Savings Account Calendar Year Contribution $1,500 Individual / $3,000 Family Health Reimbursement Arrangement Calendar Year Contribution $1,500 Individual / $3,000 Family Employees who elect to participate in, and meet eligibility requirements for, the HRA or HSA, shall have the Employer's contribution, *pro-rated, deposited into their account in equal monthly installments during the first pay period paid on the first payday of each month. Guardian Flight AirMed & LifeMed AK transportation Discounted family membership for air ambulance services available at employee's expense. Employee Assistance Program Offered through Magellan Health, this program provides free support services to employees & their family. Options include limited counseling, wellbeing coaching, legal services & more. Career Grants Available to regular status, classified employees. Flexible Spending Accounts Employee funded via pre-tax deduction. These optional accounts include a Medical FSA for qualifying medical/dental/vision expenses, a Limited Purpose FSA for qualifying dental/vision expenses, or a dependent care FSA for qualifying childcare/eldercare expenses. All accounts have maximum annual limits set by the IRS & must be elected annually. Group Life and AD&D A life insurance policy for all regular status employees in an amount equal to the employee's annual salary. A $2,000 policy is also provided for spouse and dependent children. Additional Group Life and AD&D Additional life insurance available at employee's expense. Supplemental Insurance Policies Supplemental policies including accident, cancer, disability and critical illness available through Colonial Life at employee's expense via payroll deduction. Pet Insurance Discounted rates for pet insurance through MetLife available at employee's expense. Personal Leave-Paid Time Off-PTO Employees accrue 3.08 hours of PTO per full pay period from date of hire and it is available to use immediately. Accrual increases according to a 1, 2, 5, and 10-year schedule. New hires receive a lump sum of $1,000 upon completion of 12 months of satisfactory service. Holidays Seven scheduled holidays plus five floating holidays (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Seward's Day, Alaska Day, Presidents' Day and Veterans' Day). Retirement Enrollment in the State of Alaska Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) is mandatory. Employee/ Employer contributions dependent on PERS Tier Level employee is hired under. Please note, PERS calculates service based on 6 hrs. per day/30 hrs. per week as full-time. If working less than this, your years of service (used to determine vesting schedule, retirement etc.) will be prorated accordingly. Please contact PERS for more information. Supplemental Retirement Accounts Available at employee's expense through MissionSquare Retirement. Options include an optional, employee-funded, pre-tax 457 deferred compensation program and/or a post-tax IRA. *pro-rated is defined as $125.00 per month for an individual or $250.00 per month
