Acute Care Surgeon

The Acute Care Surgeon Division at The William W. Backus Hospital, part of the Hartford HealthCare network in Norwich, Connecticut, is seeking a fellowship-trained Surgical Critical Care/Acute Care Surgeon to join an established, high-volume practice. Backus is an ACS-verified Level III Trauma Center offering a broad operative scope including emergency general surgery, surgical critical care, trauma, and elective general surgery. Practice Info ACS-verified Level III Trauma Center and regional emergency general surgery referral center serving eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island SICU primarily supports the emergency general surgery and trauma service with 24/7 in-house experienced APP coverage Established chest wall injury program offering VATS, thoracotomy, and surgical stabilization of rib fractures Robust abdominal wall reconstruction and robotic general surgery practice with dedicated elective operating block time Multidisciplinary outpatient team support including 3 full-time RNs and 2 full-time APPs Academic affiliations supporting a systemwide Surgical PA Fellowship and University of Connecticut General Surgery Residency Program rotations Responsibilities Manage a broad spectrum of complex emergency general surgery, surgical rescue, and trauma cases Lead the care of critically ill surgical patients in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit Perform advanced procedures including chest wall injury stabilization, complex abdominal wall reconstruction, and robotic general surgery Develop and maintain an active elective general surgery practice aligned with individual clinical interests Participate in quality improvement, trauma administration, and clinical research initiatives Engage in surgical education by teaching surgical PA fellows and senior residents from the University of Connecticut General Surgery Residency Program Compensation Salaried position with pay determined based on qualifications, location, internal equity, and other factors Hire bonuses Incentive pay plans Benefits Loan repayment Administrative stipends Relocation Shift & Schedule Salaried position Qualifications Board Certified/Eligible General Surgery Fellowship trained in Surgical Critical Care/Acute Care Surgery Licensed or eligible to be licensed in Connecticut
