The Tailor is responsible for providing expert garment alterations, tailoring, fittings, and repairs for merchandise sold within the Thoroughbred retail store. This position plays an integral role in delivering an exceptional luxury retail experience by ensuring every garment fits each customer with precision, craftsmanship, and attention to detail.

Unlike a traditional seamstress role, this position requires advanced tailoring knowledge, particularly with men's garments, including jackets, trousers, sport coats, dress shirts, and formalwear. The Tailor will perform alterations, fittings, garment reshaping, and repairs while maintaining the highest standards of quality and customer service.

This is a full-time, onsite position with a dedicated tailoring workspace within the retail store, allowing the Tailor to work directly with customers and retail team members throughout the day.

Primary Responsibilities

Perform professional alterations on retail merchandise, including:

  • Hemming

  • Taking in and letting out garments

  • Sleeve shortening and lengthening

  • Waist and seat adjustments

  • Jacket sleeve alterations

  • Shoulder and arm width adjustments

  • Garment reshaping

  • Zipper and button replacement

  • Invisible repairs and hand finishing

Conduct professional customer fittings and provide alteration recommendations.

Measure customers and garments accurately to achieve proper fit.

Alter men's apparel including jackets, trousers, sport coats, dress shirts, tuxedos, and formalwear.

Alter women's apparel including dresses, skirts, blouses, pants, and formal gowns.

Work confidently with delicate and specialty fabrics including:

  • Silk

  • Cashmere

  • Leather

  • Linen

  • Velvet

  • Beaded garments

  • Sequined garments

  • Formalwear

Operate and maintain professional tailoring equipment including:

  • Industrial sewing machines

  • Blind hem machine

  • Cover stitch machine

  • Serger/overlock machine

  • Steam press

  • Professional garment steamer

  • Dress forms

Perform detailed hand stitching and invisible repairs.

Collaborate with the Retail and Embroidery teams on customer requests and special orders.

Maintain an organized, clean, and professional tailoring workspace.

Complete alterations within established turnaround times while maintaining exceptional quality.

Provide outstanding customer service throughout the fitting and alteration process.

Maintain sewing equipment and report maintenance needs.

Follow all World Equestrian Center and Columbus Hospitality Management policies and safety procedures.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit for extended periods performing detailed tailoring work.

Ability to stand for extended periods during customer fittings.

Ability to bend, reach, kneel, and move throughout the retail environment.

Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.

Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

Strong visual acuity for detailed garment construction and repairs.

Qualifications, Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities

Minimum of 5 years of professional tailoring experience preferred.

Extensive experience performing alterations on men's garments, including jackets, trousers, sport coats, dress shirts, and formalwear.

Experience with women's garment alterations preferred.

Demonstrated knowledge of garment construction, pattern interpretation, fitting techniques, and garment reshaping.

Experience using:

  • Industrial sewing machines

  • Blind hem machines

  • Cover stitch machines

  • Sergers/overlock machines

  • Steam presses

  • Professional garment steamers

Experience performing hand-finished and invisible repairs.

Ability to perform multiple alterations daily while maintaining exceptional quality standards.

Experience working with luxury and specialty fabrics.

Excellent customer service and communication skills.

Highly organized with strong attention to detail.

Ability to prioritize multiple alteration requests and meet deadlines.

Professional appearance and demeanor consistent with a luxury retail environment.

Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
