Position Summary The Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes, Nutrition, and Weight Management is a large academic enterprise with nationally renowned clinical programs and robust research, educational, and training programs. The Chief provides strategic and operational leadership for the clinical, research and academic endeavors of a large, high-volume Section that delivers high quality care to a diverse and underserved patient population while advancing innovations and insights in endocrine-related health and chronic disease management. The Chief serves as a key member of the Department of Medicine leadership team and works closely with departmental, hospital, and academic partners to ensure clinical excellence, academic and research success, workforce development, and financial sustainability, aligning section priorities with the Department of Medicine and institutional mission. Section Overview The Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes, Nutrition, and Weight Management is a large, multidisciplinary academic enterprise with robust clinical, research, and educational programs. Faculty & Workforce 50+ full-time faculty including clinicians, PhDs, and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) Administrative, research, and clinical operations staff Clinical Enterprise >54,000 total outpatient visits annually (FY25), making this one of the busiest specialty clinics at BMC Comprehensive inpatient consult services Primary clinical site at BMC, with additional care delivery at satellite locations Close integration with multiple subspecialties and primary care Specialty Programs of note include: Clinical Diabetes Obesity Medicine Clinical Nutrition Thyroid Nodule & Cancer Center / Thyroid Health Center Bone Health Center Integrated Interdisciplinary Clinical Programs:Program in Adrenal Disorders, including a Specialized Center for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Primary Aldosteronism with partnerships with endocrine surgeons Multidisciplinary Thyroid Cancer and Nodule program with thyroid surgeons Interdisciplinary Pituitary Program with clinics jointly staffed with endocrine surgeons Multispecialty Resistant Hypertension Clinic partnered with Nephrology and Cardiology GenderCare Center includes partnerships with Psychiatry/Behavioral health, Social Work, and other relevant specialties. Multidisciplinary Bariatric Surgery Program involving collaboration with the surgery department and our Obesity Medicine Program Multidisicplinary Incidentaloma clinic, with direct referrals from Radiology for incidental thyroid and adrenal nodules (Surgery and Endocrine) Research Areas of funded clinical, basic, and translation research include:Diabetes, including monitoring and drug delivery technologies Thyroid disease Obesity Implementation sciences Several R and K level grants Robust clinical trials program Education 9 fellows in ACGME-accredited programs (Endocrinology, Obesity Medicine) Faculty are leaders in clerkship & residency training Abbott Diabetes Care Center of Excellence educational grant Key Responsibilities Strategic Planning & Institutional Engagement Develop and execute a clear vision for the Section aligned with Department of Medicine and institutional priorities. Foster and strengthen specialty program growth and regional reputation Expand the multidisciplinary research enterprise Enhance partnerships addressing diabetes, endocrine disease, nutrition, and health disparities Educate the next generation of endocrinologists and train endocrinology-focused scientists Represent the Section in departmental, hospital, and university governance Advocate for the needs of patients and faculty at institutional and regional levels Clinical Leadership & Quality Provide strong leadership and accountability for the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered endocrine, diabetes, and nutrition care across inpatient and ambulatory settings. Champion evidence-based, culturally responsive, and equitable care models for complex and underserved populations Oversee quality improvement, safety, patient experience, and access initiatives Support clinical workforce resilience and efficiency Partner with hospital leadership to optimize inpatient consult services and specialty program growth Research & Scholarship Provide strategic oversight for section research portfolio spanning basic, translational, clinical, and health equity research. Support physician-scientists and PhD investigators in maintaining and expanding extramural funding Expand pool of investigators advancing research insights in endocrinology-related areas Foster interdisciplinary collaborations across the Department and institution Promote research aligned with BMC's mission, including health equity, population health, and care delivery innovation Facilitate and grow clinical trials and translational opportunities within specialty programs Academic & Educational Mission Advance excellence in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education. Oversee ACGME-accredited training programs (Endocrinology and Obesity Medicine) comprising 9 fellows Ensure high-quality training experiences and accreditation compliance Supporteducator development, innovation, and scholarship mentorship and teaching for all trainees and learners a robust research training program Faculty Leadership & Workforce Lead and support a large and diverse workforce across clinical, research, and educational missions.
