Position Overview The Inland Empire Utilities Agency offers a laboratory internship. The internship lasts 25 hours a week and up to 960 hours per fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Hours are flexible and agreed between intern and supervisor. Type: Non‑Exempt Number of positions: One Eligibility List: This recruitment will establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies. Essential Functions Perform a wide variety of scientific and technical duties supporting sampling and analysis of water, wastewater, biosolids, and industrial samples. Receive, organize and maintain the inventory of laboratory and sampling supplies. Prepare, sort, wash, decontaminate, sterilize and store all laboratory glassware; prepare and preserve sample bottles. Maintain laboratory cleanliness. Prepare reports and recommendations relative to assigned areas of responsibility. Compile data or materials and create spreadsheets, prepare reports, manuals and publications. Participate in pulling documents and filing information. Perform other related duties as required, including administrative and technical tasks. Limited travel to off‑site locations may be required from time to time. Qualifications High school diploma or G.E.D. Current enrollment or graduation from an accredited college or university with coursework in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Sciences or a closely related field. Preference given to individuals with prior related professional work experience. Attention to detail, excellent oral and written communication skills and advanced computer skills. Technologically savvy and knowledgeable in Microsoft Office products such as Excel. Work Schedule Work hours are estimated at 20 to 25 hours a week. Interns may work flexible hours as agreed with supervisor. Office hours are Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Ineligibility Members of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) are ineligible. Licenses and Certificates A valid California class C driver's license. Knowledge Of Principles of data collection and research techniques and methods. Basic report preparation and writing methods. Modern office equipment, computers and applicable software. Proper English, spelling and grammar. Ability To Operate office equipment including computer and software. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Analyze data, situations and research materials; formulate options and make recommendations. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Selection Process Applications will be reviewed for accuracy, completion, relevant experience, education, training and other qualifications. Candidates with the strongest background will be invited to a selection process that may include written tests, oral interviews, and practical examinations. Successful candidates must pass a background reference check and a pre‑employment physical examination with a drug screen.
