Registered Nurse

The staff Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated time frame. The RN provides care to these patients via the utilization of the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, financial, and human resources within the philosophy of the institution. Responsibilities include performing all duties required by the unit as specific to the scope of service. The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintaining up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided is essential to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team. The RN completes an initial assessment upon patient admission and develops an appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards based on patient and family needs. The plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures are implemented accordingly. The RN modifies the plan of care based upon continuous evaluation. Responsibility for patient and employee safety includes reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents. Communication with others directly and privately when necessary to resolve issues is important. The RN offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers and confers with colleagues to expand the knowledge base. Identifying personal learning needs and taking initiative to begin appropriate solutions is expected. Fulfilling all requirements of departmental competencies is essential. Specific functions include receiving patient bedside shift reports, ensuring the inclusion of patient input. The RN delegates patient care tasks/responsibilities to assigned healthcare team members and validates the completion of delegated tasks throughout the shift. Completing and documenting basic patient care activities such as assessments and interpretation of vital signs is required. The RN ensures physician order completion, admission/discharge of patients, and hourly rounding completion on each assigned patient. Meeting documentation standards for each assigned patient is essential. The RN provides patient medications utilizing the patient 5 Rights: Right Patient, Right Medication, Right Route, Right Dose, and Right Time. Maintaining patient safety as the highest priority includes ensuring compliance with safety measures. A positive attitude must be maintained to promote a healthy work environment and a healing patient environment. Prompt answering of patient call lights is necessary to ensure effective triage and completion of patient requests and medical needs. Using critical thinking to evaluate the overall patient condition and nursing judgment to identify and act on changes in patient status is required. Effective communication within the healthcare team promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, effective patient care coordination, and patient safety. Time management skills enable a quick admission/discharge process for observation status patients and facilitate the completion of patient testing to expedite discharge.
