Job Summary: We are seeking an ESL Instructor to join our team under the supervision of the Education Department Manager. This position will start July 1st, 2026. The role helps move students toward economic stability and social integration by helping them gain practical English language proficiency needed for survival, basic communication in the community, and employment/career success in the United States.
The classes this role will teach are in-person at the Low Beginning and High Beginning levels.
The position requires attention to detail for attendance tracking, supervisor and team meetings. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for education and the ability to foster positive connections within the community.
Status: Part-time, 20 hours a week, Non-Exempt
Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 9am-2pm; In-person
Reports to : Education Department Manager
Salary Range: $23/hour
Expected Start Date: July 1st, 2026
Job Responsibilities
Teaching:
- Plan and deliver instruction to enrolled adult learners at times and location(s) assigned and within program curriculum and service guidelines.
- Prepare quarterly curriculum aligned with Illinois Content Standards
- Integrate digital literacy and career pathways into curriculum and instruction.
- Provide opportunities for volunteers to engage with individuals or small groups to support student learning.
- Research, develop, and apply effective curriculum, instructional methods, and incorporate Illinois Adult Education ABE/ASE and ESL Content Standards per ICCB guidelines.
- Collaborate with the Community Engagement department and Citizenship Classes to incorporate Civic Education and community-based learning into the curriculum.
Assessment and Record Keeping:
- Record learner attendance and participation in other learning activities.
- Assess adult learners' skills, needs, and interests.
- Help students set attainable goals and plans.
- Observe the progress of learners, and keep records and documentation of individual progress.
- Conduct and record results of teacher-learner conferences.
- Communicate regularly with students on attendance, assessments, and other needs.
- Complete required reports (i.e. attendance, volunteer hours, and lesson plans) as scheduled to ensure program compliance.
Professional Development:
- Collaborate and consult with other staff members toward integration of all program components (ex. participate in field trips, special activities).
- Manage and monitor learners' use of materials in the classroom.
- Participate in departmental projects, events, and operations.
- Actively work on professional growth by attending conferences, staff meetings, and pre-service and in-service training as provided. Must complete 12 hours of professional development every fiscal year.
- Other duties as requested.
Key Competencies:
We’re seeking candidates who have a high-level of data entry accuracy, demonstrate initiative and strong critical thinking skills, are strong communicators, and excel in relationship building. The following qualifications are required:
- A Bachelor's degree is required. A major in education or a related field is preferred.
- Experience in ESL education is required.
- Certification in TESOL/TEFL/TESL preferred.
- Ability to develop lesson plans that responds to clients’ needs, empowers participants, and fulfills specific grant requirements.
- Computer skills including Google Workspace (docs, sheets, slides) and database.
- Commitment to refugee and immigrant advocacy.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse program participants and staff.
- Respect for others’ experiences, opinions, language, values, culture, and knowledge
- Second language proficiency strongly preferred (Ie. Urdu, Hindi, Gujarati, Rohingya, Dari)
Physical Demands:
Extended periods of standing during teaching sessions and occasional physical setup of teaching materials might be required.
