Medical Surgical Oncology Registered Nurse (RN)

Job Overview

This unit is dedicated to caring for patients receiving chemotherapy. We are seeking travelers who are either chemotherapy certified or willing to obtain certification. Certification can be obtained prior to starting the assignment or completed during the assignment. Candidates must confirm their commitment to obtaining the ONS Fundamentals of Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Administration certification. A fee for certification is covered in the contract agreement.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care to patients undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
• Monitor patient responses to treatments, including administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy medications.
• Perform tasks related to medication management, including accessing ports, blood product administration, and line management.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive patient care.
• Float to similar units and alternate care locations as needed.
• Participate in Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team as required during catastrophic events.
• Attend monthly staff meetings and complete required unit orientation.

Qualifications

• Current BLS certification is required.
• ONS Fundamentals of Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Administration certification preferred; travelers must be willing to obtain this certification.
• At least 2 years of nursing experience in a medical-surgical setting is required.
• First-time travelers are accepted.

Shift Details

• Shift: 3x12 hours (06:45 - 19:15)
• Every other weekend work is required.
• Call may be required; flexibility to cover additional shifts may be necessary.

Patient Population

The primary patient population includes individuals with general medical-surgical diagnoses, including but not limited to:

• Acutely ill patients receiving chemotherapy.
• Conditions such as AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic Shock, and Diabetic Foot Ulcers.

Unit Specifics

During periods of high patient volume, typical nurse-to-patient ratios may increase. Contract staff will be equally assigned to ensure adequate coverage alongside permanent staff. Attendance to all scheduled meetings and orientations is mandatory.

Required Skills

• Experience in colostomy care, accessing vascular ports, and administering blood products.
• Capable of managing central lines, peripheral lines, and basic wound care.
• Proficient with heparin and insulin administration, and care of surgical drains and chest tubes.
• Knowledge in infection control practices and non-invasive airway management.

Unit Systems

This unit utilizes PYXIS for medication management and EPIC for documentation and communication. SBAR communication format is expected for patient handoffs.

Attire

Scrubs required: Navy Blue and White.

Orientation

An orientation period of 24 hours (two shifts) will be provided to ensure familiarity with unit protocols and procedures.
