Learn more and explore benefits at Location: Residence Life Position Status: Full-time Hours: Varied (Post hours/scheduled if known) Position Number: 222703/10-1189 FLSA Status: Exempt POSITION SUMMARY: The Coordinator for Commuter Affairs and Upperclass Communities is a full-time, 12-month professional staff position that provides direct programmatic, operational, and logistical support across all functional areas under the Assistant Director of Commuter Life and Upperclass Programming. This position is designed to function as the operational backbone of the office, ensuring that commuter student programs, the Commuter Assistant program, upperclass community engagement, community and neighborhood relations efforts, and assessment activities are sustained and executed with consistency. The Coordinator serves as a frontline point of contact for commuter and off-campus students, maintains active collaboration with campus partners, and supports the Senior Director’s ability to fulfill strategic, institutional, and external-facing responsibilities.The role will live on campus and serve in the SHRL resident director on-call rotation. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: COMMUTER AFFAIRS PROGRAMS, SERVICES, AND OFF-CAMPUS STUDENT SUPPORTAssists in the development, implementation, and assessment of programs, services, and resources for commuter and off-campus students, including undergraduate and graduate populations. Manages day-to-day operations of the Commuter Center, including space oversight, resource availability, and responsive student assistance. Coordinates the annual update and distribution of the Off-Campus Guide and all related commuter resources. Supports the Commuter Council as a staff resource, assisting the Senior Director in administering the student-led governing body. Promotes responsible off-campus living practices, including awareness of City of Pittsburgh ordinances governing noise, occupancy, parking, and trash removal.Assists in monitoring and responding to emerging issues affecting commuter and off-campus student welfare, including renter’s rights, housing instability, and fire safety. Assists the Senior Director in following up with students regarding off-campus behavior concerns, in coordination with the Office of Student Conduct. Provides ongoing proactive and responsive communication to commuter and off-campus students via email, campus platforms, and the office email account.COMMUTER ASSISTANT PROGRAM AND STUDENT OUTREACH.Assists in the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of Commuter Assistant (CA) student staff in support of the Senior Director’s oversight of the program. Assist in assigning incoming students to Commuter Assistant groups. Assists in the planning and implementation of Commuter Assistant Training and Commuter Pre-Orientation, ensuring alignment with departmental goals and student onboarding timelines. UPPERCLASS COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING AND ENGAGEMENT Assists in developing and implementing programming models and engagement strategies for upper-class students living in University-affiliated communities and off-campus. Coordinates events, programs, and initiatives designed to foster belonging, academic connection, and social engagement among upperclass students who have transitioned out of traditional residence halls. Supports the Senior Director in maintaining collaboration with the Director of Residence Life and staff to ensure continuity of programming and student support across on-campus and off-campus populations. Serves as operational support for the office’s upperclass community engagement calendar and logistics.COMMUNITY AND NEIGHBORHOOD RELATIONS SUPPORT Assists in preparation and logistics for participation in city municipal meetings, neighborhood forums, and civic events where the Senior Director represents the University.Supports outreach and communication with South Side neighborhood organizations, including the South Side Community Council, Block Watches, South Side Community Forum, and the South Side Chamber of Commerce, as directed.Assists in coordinating with the Office of Community Engagement to connect off-campus students with service and civic engagement opportunities in the surrounding neighborhood. Supports the Senior Director’s collaboration with the Department of Athletics and the Office of Greek Life to provide targeted off-campus living guidance to student athletes and fraternity/sorority members residing on the South Side.ASSESSMENT, REPORTING, AND OFFICE COMMUNICATIONSAssists in implementing the office’s annual assessment plan for commuter and off-campus student programs; collects, manages, and maintains data used to inform programming decisions and resource allocation. Assists in preparing annual reports on departmental activities, community relations, and student engagement outcomes. Manages office social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and other relevant platforms), the office website, email lists, and Campus Link, ensuring content is current, accurate, and aligned with the Senior Director’s communications priorities Completes other duties as assigned.REQUIREMENTS:Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Higher Education, student affairs, counseling, communications or a related field from an accredited educational institution.1-3 years of relevant experience. Preferred qualifications: Masters degree in higher education administration or a related field from an accredited educational institution. Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following: Knowledge of commuter and off-campus student needs, challenges, and engagement strategies in a higher education setting.Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and implement programs and services for diverse student populations, including undergraduate and graduate students.Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate proactively and responsively with students, families, campus partners, and community stakeholders.Experience supervising and developing student staff, including recruitment, training, scheduling, and evaluation.Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and deadlines in a complex, fast-paced environment.Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in managing rosters, program logistics, assessment data, and communications.Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, campus engagement platforms (e.g., Campus Link), and social media management.Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external community organizations.Ability to work some evenings and weekends as required by departmental programs and events.Commitment to student advocacy, equity, and supporting students in achieving their academic and personal goals.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the University Community.
