Work is performed under regular supervision. Supervision may be exercised over maintenance or utility workers. Work may be specialized according to the assigned division.Essential FunctionsOperates construction, excavation, hauling, and maintenance equipment including dump truck, tractor, mower, backhoe, and other mechanized equipment in the construction, repair and maintenance of streets, utilities, storm drainage systems, and related facilities.Transports tools and other construction equipment to and from construction sites.Adheres to and ensures compliance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices standards within rights-of-way.Inspects and maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles for proper use and care.Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on automotive equipmentPerforms general public works and grounds maintenance work as assigned.Performs related tasks as required.Qualifications And Physical DemandsEducation and Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience in the operation of motorized equipment used in the maintenance, repair, or construction of public infrastructure or related facilities. Special Qualifications: A driver's license valid in the State of Florida. Must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License within six months of employment. Alternates with others on a rotating standby, off-hours call schedule as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing construction equipment, including but not limited to rubber tire backhoe, excavator, bush hog, vac truck, front-end loader, and skid steer.Knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment.Skill and care in the operation of varied types of specialized maintenance and construction equipment, including but not limited to rubber tire backhoe, excavator, bush hog, vac truck, front-end loader, and skid steer.Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.Ability to determine materials needed for projects.Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other personnel and the public; ability to oversee the work of others.Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.Ability to perform overtime, holiday, and weekend work as needed.This position is part of the Qualification Advancement Program. To advance to Equipment Operator II, an employee must complete two years of service as an Equipment Operator I and obtain the FDOT Maintenance of Traffic/Flagger Certification.Physical DemandsThe work is medium work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.Climbing: Ascending or descending terrain, ladders, stairs, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.Hearing: Required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force to draw, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward.Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.Visual Acuity: Required for operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities.Vocal Communication: Required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.Work Environment And Other InformationWork EnvironmentThe worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and oils.
