Head and Neck Surgical Oncologist

MaineHealth

MaineHealth Maine Medical Center is seeking a fellowship-trained Head and Neck Surgical Oncologist to join the Division of Otolaryngology in Portland, Maine.

This is an opportunity to join a mature, high-volume head and neck oncology program within Maine's largest tertiary referral center. The program currently includes two fellowship-trained head and neck surgeons, two dedicated advanced practice providers, established multidisciplinary workflows, and a strong regional referral base across the MaineHealth system.

The ideal candidate will have training and clinical interest in comprehensive head and neck oncologic surgery. Candidates with microvascular reconstructive training and/or transoral robotic surgery experience are especially encouraged to apply.

Position Highlights

  • Join an established Head and Neck Oncology program with immediate access to operative and clinic volume.

  • Practice at Maine Medical Center, Maine's premier tertiary referral hospital, with broad oncologic case complexity.

  • Access to a single-port robotic surgical platform, with opportunity to participate in and help grow a TORS program.

  • Work within a collaborative team model including dedicated head and neck APP support.

  • Participate in a twice-monthly multidisciplinary Head and Neck Tumor Board with strong engagement from radiation oncology, medical oncology, pathology, radiology, speech-language pathology, nutrition, nursing navigation, and supportive care.

  • Participate in a multidisciplinary Head and Neck clinic.

  • Opportunity to contribute to program development, care pathway design, quality improvement, clinical growth, and regional outreach.

  • Maintain a focused head and neck oncology practice with the option to participate in broader otolaryngology care depending on candidate interest and departmental need.

Clinical Model and Support

  • Shared call model across a group of 12 otolaryngologists.

  • Inpatient care supported by a dedicated ENT hospitalist service.

  • Established referral patterns throughout MaineHealth and the broader region.

  • Strong clinic, operative, inpatient, and advanced practice infrastructure.

  • Meaningful clinical autonomy within a collaborative group practice.

  • Opportunity to build or expand areas of subspecialty focus within head and neck oncology, endocrine surgery, transoral robotic surgery, cutaneous oncology, salivary surgery, survivorship, or reconstruction.

Academic and Professional Opportunities

  • Faculty appointment through Tufts University School of Medicine.

  • Active role in teaching residents and medical students.

  • Opportunities for clinical research, quality improvement, multidisciplinary program development, and leadership within the head and neck oncology service line.

  • Participation in the continued growth of a regional tertiary-care head and neck oncology program.

Why This Opportunity

This role offers the clinical depth of a tertiary referral head and neck oncology practice while avoiding many of the constraints of larger urban academic systems. The successful candidate will step into an established program with immediate volume, strong institutional support, APP and hospitalist infrastructure, access to complex oncologic cases, single-port robotic technology, and a meaningful opportunity to shape the next phase of head and neck oncology care in Maine.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery

  • Fellowship training in Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery

  • Eligibility for medical licensure in Maine

  • Microvascular reconstructive training or interest preferred

  • TORS experience or interest preferred but not required
