Holtec International and its subsidiary companies are designing an unfailingly safe and secure source of clean energy using nuclear fission, called the SMR-300 small modular reactor. The position is offered by SMR LLC as a member of the Holtec International family, a global turnkey supplier of equipment and systems for nuclear, solar, geothermal, and fossil power generation sectors of the energy industry. SMR-300 is a small modular reactor based on PWR technology. The SMR-300 project provides an exciting opportunity to work alongside innovative engineers focused on developing the next generation light water reactor to be deployed around the world. The Human Factors Engineering Engineer II is responsible for developing and implementing Human Factors Engineering (HFE) activities in support of SMR-300 plant design, development, and licensing. This role derives and maintains HFE requirements, performs task analysis and human error analysis, evaluates Human-System Interfaces (HSIs), supports safety and licensing activities, and helps ensure that HFE requirements are integrated across plant systems. The Human Factors Engineering Engineer II works with multidisciplinary engineering teams to produce HFE technical reports, assessments, and licensing documentation while providing technical guidance to junior engineers. Primary responsibilities: Develop and implement Human Factors Engineering (HFE) activities in support of new nuclear plant design, development, and licensing Derive, manage, and maintain HFE requirements in alignment with applicable nuclear regulatory guidance and industry standards Conduct task analysis and human error analysis to support safety and licensing activities, staffing strategies, identification and evaluation of Important Human Actions (IHAs), and human-system integration Support the design and review of Human-System Interfaces (HSIs), including control rooms, digital systems, local control stations, and panels Participate in multidisciplinary design and maintenance reviews to ensure HFE requirements, including maintainability and lifecycle considerations, are effectively integrated across plant systems Plan and execute HFE Verification and Validation (V&V), including Integrated System Validation (ISV) Prepare HFE assessments and licensing documentation to demonstrate regulatory compliance Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams and present technical findings to internal stakeholders and nuclear regulators Provide technical guidance and constructive feedback to junior engineers and support review of engineering work products Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, or a related engineering, psychology, or human-centered design discipline from an ABET-accredited college or university 5-7 years of relevant Human Factors Engineering experience in nuclear or other regulated safety-critical industries (e.g., aerospace, defense) Demonstrated experience performing task analysis, human error analysis, human reliability assessment, and Human-System Interface (HSI) evaluations for complex engineered systems Working knowledge of Human Factors regulatory guidance and applicable industry standards Experience supporting safety analysis activities, including collaboration with Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) and evaluation of Important Human Actions (IHAs) Develops comprehensive HFE technical reports, assessments, and licensing documentation with minimal oversight Communicates effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams, clients, and project stakeholders Exercises sound engineering judgment, balancing technical rigor with project scope, schedule, and regulatory expectations Independently plans and executes assigned Human Factors Engineering analyses, evaluations, and work packages with limited technical oversight Provides technical guidance and constructive feedback to junior engineers and supports review of engineering work products Eligible to work under 10 CFR Part 810 Preferred qualifications: Master’s degree in Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, or related human-centered discipline preferred Demonstrated experience applying HFE methods in nuclear or other regulated safety-critical industries Experience contributing to or leading elements of an HFE program aligned with NRC guidance (e.g., NUREG-0711, NUREG-0700) Experience supporting control room design, digital HSI development, plant layout, or maintainability evaluations Experience supporting Verification and Validation (V&V), including participation in Integrated System Validation (ISV) Practical involvement in licensing activities, regulatory interactions, or responses to regulatory inquiries Familiarity with applicable nuclear and industry standards and guidance (e.g., NRC, IEEE, ISO, EPRI, IAEA) Experience mentoring junior engineers and contributing to continuous improvement of HFE processes and methodologies A Generation Ahead by Design™Investing in people who power the future.
